This project goal is to provide clean potable water for Jordanian school children in an efficient and sustainable manner. Jordan is ranked one of the top nations in the world for water scarcity and resources. Not only is the water contaminated but it is scarce and the government cannot supply enough water to many areas in Jordan. Underground water tanks are deteriorated and as such the water is polluted. Hygiene is an issue and the recommended daily intake of water is not met. (WHO)
Jordanian school children suffer from water-washed diseases resulting from contaminated water supplies and the children suffer from scabies, trachoma and flea, lice and tick-borne diseases. Additionally, the mortality rates among children using and drinking this water is increasing.
Statistics estimate that the number of school children range from 300-1400 per school with 70% of them below the age of 13.
The need and the necessity are obvious. The project entails supplying Jordanian public schools with clean water tanks and pipes leading to clean faucets that are locked by schools and maintained by the Ministry of Education.
Rotary Club Petra's goal is to aid 250 public schools per year eventually leading to 1200 schools fitted in the next 5 years.
If funding is met we anticipate that every 10 schools will take about 2 months to execute. Therefore in 10 months, 50 schools will be fitted so that clean water is provided for the school children.
The cost of each school is estimated at $2000 and the sustainability is solidified with the partnership of the Ministry of Education and their commitment to ensure that the tanks and faucets are maintained and running at all times.
