The Regional Perinatal Center in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine treats about 5000 women per year with 3000 births and about 1500 surgical interventions. The city of Ivano-Frankivsk is in the western part of Ukraine in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Currently they have no way to perform surgical interventions other than open surgery which leads to a higher mortality rate than most of Europe. Rotarian Dr. Maryan Yaremko is the Vice Chief Medical Officer of this regional perinatal center. He has requested help with the purchase of perinatal laparoscopy equipment, and the requisite training, stating that this would help decrease the mortality rate, as a result of less intrusive procedures. Of all possible projects this was his, and the Ivano-Frankivsk Rotary Club's, first choice to help their region in Ukraine. Should they receive this equipment, this will be the only laparoscopy equipment in the entire region.
Because of the scope of the project and the two distinct pieces of equipment needed, we have decided to make two projects out of this one. This first project will encompass the main laparascopy set. The second project, slated for the 2015-2016 Rotary year that starts in July of 2015, will encompass the ob-gyn portion of the equipment.
The Ivano-Frankivsk Rotary Club has committed to the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment as well as purchase of consumables after initial purchase and training. They believe that a "healthy generation starts with healthy women".
The Burleson Rotary Club of Burleson, TX, USA has partnered with the Ivano-Frankivsk Rotary Club to fund this project. A personal trip to Ukraine was involved in meeting Ukrainian Rotarians and discovering possible projects and deciding upon this one. Rotarians will be closely involved with this project from the start through the conclusion to long after. The Rotarians in both the Burleson and the Ivano-Frankivsk clubs are committed to this project and partnering on many more to come.
Please consider donating to this project to help the good people Ukraine realize their "Healthy generation starts with Healthy Women" belief.
