The project is intended to provide 20 (twenty) energy saving institutional stoves at ten boarding secondary schools in Mityana District, Uganda. The stoves will mitigate the rapidly reducing forest cover in the area as trees are cut down to provide wood fuel for cooking. This affects water levels as large areas are experiencing drought and unreliable rainfall. In addition, the kitchen staff at the different schools suffer from various chronic diseases including cancers, bronchitis, premature births, pneumonia etc. resulting in premature deaths and a strain on household incomes as treatments are very expensive.
The stoves will save up to 75% of the current wood fuel consumption and will make the kitchen smoke and heat free. There will be great saving of school funds and check the rampant cutting down of valuable trees to cook food.
