Project Description Region: North America Country: Mexico Location: Ensenada Total Budget: $52,500 Area of Focus: Maternal and child health View Online Proposal Form The 1000 Smiles clinic have been held every 3 months, annually, since 1985. The volunteer doctors and dentists provide corrective surgery and services for cleft palate/lip patients, and general dental care for them and their families. In an ongoing effort to improve the lives of these children and help them become healthy and productive members of society, the clinic needs to update or replace their equipment. Members of several clubs in Districts 5340, 5330, 5320 and 4100 assist in the management of the clinics and provide general and financial support for this effort. In addition, a group of non-ambulatory and developmentally handicapped children have been identified that need general dentistry care. Part of the funds from this global grant will pay for portable dental equipment including x-ray machine, patient and doctor chairs, as well as a unit that contains drill, air and other needed items. This grant will further fund a specialized microscope for patients with ear tube problems and equipment for the in-house orthodontia laboratory. One of the side effects of cleft palate/lip malformation is a need for hearing canal health and a specialized ENT microscope will also be acquired.
