Many young persons are at risk of falling prey to gangs by being exposed to negative behaviors. The age group that appears to be most vulnerable is the age range of 11 to 21. The result of this is that the specific age group has a high probability of transfer of these negative behaviors resulting in exhibition of maladaptive behaviors such as truancy, violence, gang membership, physical and verbal violence and at risk sexual activity. The identified needs are not currently adequately being met by existing organisations, local resources or Government agencies. The proposed activity consists of a co-operative effort between The Rotary Club of Road Town, a not for profit local group named Follow-The-Movement and another not for profit local group titled Hope Foundation. The above groups will combine resources and capability to directly tackle the above identified issues/behaviors, develop and launch a campaign to achieve the following:
a. Crime minimization
b. Drug prevention
c. Minimization of at risk sexual behavior
d. Improvement of Self Esteem
e. Improvement of behavioral attitudes
The improvement in the above 5 issues will benefit the community significantly providing better social outcomes.
The proposed activity is a sustainable Humanitarian project with elements of literacy improvement and falling under the Rotary Foundation area of focus "promotion of peace and conflict prevention/resolution."
Some identified youths are enrolled in schools. Schools will be identified in the selection process. Parents of the identified youths will be engaged and encouraged to participate in the process to improve behaviors. The education Department will provide approval of the consortium to enter relevant schools. This is a 3 year project.
