Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Guatemala

Location: Las Lomas

Total Budget: $42,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Every 6 seconds, someone dies of disease related to lack of water or sanitation. Clean water, good hygiene and proper sanitation all work together to prevent disease, so we have been targeting all three areas in this region for several years. This projects specifically works to improve sanitation by building 100 latrines for families in Las Lomas, where the poor handling of the solid human waste is causing human illnesses and environmental degradation.

We have a strong Rotary International Partner Club for this project, who has implemented numerous projects with us. We also have strong partner in the Municipality of San Jacinto, which we have worked with previously, and has committed to providing labor and project management. We visited the Chiquimula region in June and have follow-up trip planned for the 1st quarter of 2015. We currently have 2 Global Grants for 2013/2014 in progress in the region.

The Rotary Club of Fort Collins took a trip to Lomas last week to visit the latrine project. We toured the project with the San Jacinto municipality and the Chiquimula rotarians. The project is now complete and only the final reporting needs to be filed with The Rotary Foundation. The Chiquimula club is working on preparing the final report.
