There are 15 million people blind in India. Every third blind person in the world is an Indian. These statistics have no impact on us nowadays as we are constantly bombarded with large figures everyday. It is only when it happens to someone close to us that we realise the predicament. People do not go blind in numbers - they go blind individually - each one in their own home among loved ones.
In India the tragedy is that 80% of the blindness is either curable or avoidable. Also while a majority of the population lives in rural areas, the services are located in urban cities.
The leading cause of global blindness, cataract is present in more than half of all cases. Visual loss occurs because opacification of the lens obstructs light from passing and being focused on to the retina at the back of the eye.
It is most commonly due to aging, but there are many other causes. Over time, yellow-brown pigment is deposited in the lens and this, together with disruption of the lens fibers, reduces the transmission of light and leads to visual problems.
Those with cataracts often experience difficulty in appreciating colors and changes in contrast, driving, reading, recognizing faces, and coping with glare from bright lights.
In 1998, it was estimated that some 20 million people were blind due to cataract, and at least 100 million eyes have very poor vision as a result of cataract. In India in the early 1990s, it was estimated that more than 80 percent of blind people, or more than 10 million individuals, suffered from bilateral cataract, and another 10 million individuals had cataract in one eye.
Rotary Club Of Faridabad AAstha intends to conduct "1000 CATARACT OPERATIONS" in the Faridabad district which falls under Rotary Distt 3010. These operations shall be carried out in association with Venu Charitable Society which is also a non profit-making voluntary organisation engaged in providing qualitative and quantitative eye care in and around Delhi for over 30 years.
The roadmap for carrying out the operations:
• Identification of area based on availability of patients & scarcity of medical facility.
• Conducting a medical check up camp, which will help diagnose the need of operation or medication in the patients.
• If a patient is identified with Cataract he will be immediately taken to the base hospital in the hospital van for further treatment. If not diagnosed with cataract then he/she will be given required medicine and sent back.
• Once the patients reach the base hospitals, all their pre-operative tests will be done for carrying out the operation next day.
• Operation for lens change will be performed.
• Patients will be kept in hospital for one more day for post operative treatment after which he/she will be given medicines/ wearing glasses etc. and discharged.
