Problem Description:

Any society cannot achieve real development if majority of its people particularly live in an unhealthy and unclean surroundings due to lack of access to safe water and sanitation. Poor water and sanitation facilities have many other serious repercussions. A direct link exists between water, sanitation and, health and nutrition and human well being .Consumption of contaminated drinking water, improper disposal of human excreta, lack of personal and food hygiene and improper disposal of solid and liquid waste have been major causes of many diseases in India and it is estimated that around 30 million people suffer from water related illnesses. Children particularly girls and women are the most affected.

In rural area there are more than 50% houses are not having toilet within/attached to their houses.

Objective of Project:

Mahatma Gandhi preached and practiced sanitation as way of life and desired that others follow it. Total sanitation and hygiene was one of the theme of Mahatma Gandhiji during the freedom struggle of India. The practice of open defecation in India comes from a combination of factors... the most Prominent of them being the traditional behavioral pattern and lack of awareness of the people about the associated health hazards.

Our objective is to start campaign of Total Sanitation in village.

Specific Objective:

Our club Rajkot Greater is closely associated with village Ambardi since last three years. This village has population of around 5000 and is 80 km away from our city. On the outskirts of village one school cum hostel (1200 Students) with difference is adopted by our club. Our majority club members have already visited this school several times on different occasion of project like Girls toilet block, Matching grant project of water sump and drip irrigation, independence day, Medical camp etc.

We wish to make this village with 100% sanitation facility in every home.We have already surveyed each and every home and found around 400 homes are lacking toilet block within their home.

So we propose to build 400 toilet block inside every home in this village with unique idea of support of labour from beneficiaries for masonary work at minimum cost.

Reach of the Project and Intended Beneficiaries:

Women often suffer from lack of privacy, harassment and need

to walk large distances to find a suitable place for defecation in the absence of household/appropriate neighbourhood toilet facilities. Real benefit will be for Senior citizen, women and children to improve quality of life in rural areas.

All the beneficiaries are from lower class, uneducated and doing labor work in farm.

Sustainability of Project:

When we will empower village under Total Sanitation Campaign, it will be big awareness amongst villager to adopt this change in daily practice. Toilet block will be used for life long and will be maintained easily by beneficiaries themselves.

Project cost:

Rough max estimate is 200 US$ per toilet block.

Total cost of Project around 80,000 US$.

Our club is ready to contribute 25,000 to 30,000 US$.

We are confident to execute this project with big nos of involvement of Rotarians, School management, Local leaders and beneficiaries.

We know this is a mammoth task to execute on ground level but we have decided to accept this challenge for large nos of real beneficiaries.

Timeline of Project:

After getting fund we can complete project within 6-7 months.
