Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Mubende

Total Budget: $86,563

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy

1. PROJECT TITLE: Improvement of Sanitation in primary schools

2. BRIEF BACKGROUND TO THE PROJECT

2.1 Mubende District is located south-Western of Uganda, 158 Km from the Capital city Kampala. It has 3 counties, 18 sub-counties plus Town Council. It has 174 parishes with a population of 680,000 people.

The District has 218 Government aided primary schools and over 350 private primary schools. It has 47 secondary schools of which, 19 are government aided. It also has 3 tertiary institutions ie, (1 National Teachers' College, 1 Technical Institute, and 1 Community Polytechnic.)

2.2 Primary Education in Mubende District.

Primary Education in Uganda is on Free Education program, that is, "Universal Primary Education (UPE). This has resulted into big enrollment in Government schools.

Mubende District has a total of 115,118 pupils in the 218 Government schools, of which 50,700 are male, while 64,418 are female. That big enrollment is threatened by inadequate facilities like: teachers, classrooms, sitting facilities but worst of all inadequate latrines.

2.3 Inadequate latrines

We have 865 stances against 2,302 stances required, hence creating a gap of 1,437. This creates an abnormal pupils- stance ratio of 1:133 instead of 1:50. In some schools, some pupils are forced to go to the nearby bushes due to the high competition of the facility. Such a situation contributes to the dropout rate of pupils, especially girls which is at 27.4% Females, and 25.63% Males.

3.1 Problem Statement

Many primary school lack adequate latrine facilities and yet the Government and the parents do not have the capacity to handle the situation satisfactorily. This puts the hygiene of those schools in a dangerous situation. It also contributes to the high drop out rate, especially of the girls, because of lack of washrooms. Many schools have only one latrine which is shared by boys and girls, as well as staff members! Other schools have filed up latrines. This circumstance cause hygienic diseases like dysentery, cholera and diarrhea in schools. Other schools' latrines have collapsed and schools use temporary ones as they wait for assistance, a situation that some times force some pupils to defecate in the nearby bushes!. Ultimately, such a situation impacts negatively on the general performance of schools in Mubende.

3.2 Purpose of the Project

The purpose of the project is to increase on the number of stances by 48 in order to improve on sanitation in 12 schools that are in dire need of latrines, by constructing 12 girls latrines, each of 4 stances with a washroom.

3.3 objectives of the Project

3.3.1 To improve health and sanitation in schools by providing adequate stances.

3.3.2 To alleviate sanitary caused diseases like dysentery, cholera and diarrhea in schools and communities.

3.3.3 To reduce on the dropout rate, especially that of the girls.

3.3.4 To improve on the general performance of schools

3.4 Target beneficiaries:

The project targets learners but more especially girls, who normally dropout of school due to lack of conducive environment to attend to their feminine conditions like separate toilets and wash rooms.

3.5 Activities to achieve the objectives:

3.5.1 To construct 12 drainable latrine blocks at 12 schools which are in dangerous condition. The 12 latrines will be for girls, each of 4 stances with a washroom, plus a small water tank for hand washing and bathing for girls.

The 12 schools in dangerous situation are:
