KABUTEMBA ADOPT A VILLAGE PROJECT
Background
Kabutemba Village is located in Gomba District in a remote area 6 miles from Kanoni trading center and 60 miles from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The members of this community are very poor and mainly survive on subsistence agriculture. The population in the village is steadily rising and currently has over 500 households with an average of 10 people per household.
Rotary Club of Bukoto intends to implement an adopt a village project concept in this area. The proposed project seeks to make multiple interventions that can create a holistic positive impact on the community. The areas of focus to be covered include Education and Literacy, Economic Empowerment and Water and Sanitation.
1. Education and Literacy
Objective: To provide education to the underprivileged children of Kabutemba.
For a long time, the children of Kabutemba village had to walk long distances, sometimes over 8kms and going through bush and forest, to reach the nearest 'school' (a single dilapidated structure that was partitioned to accommodate all the classes, P1-P7).
The Rotary Club of Bukoto identified the need to support the development of education facilities in this community and so far, by raising funds from members and other well wishers, the club has constructed three classroom blocks in Kabutemba village each having two classes.
As part of this project, the Rotary Club of Bukoto is looking for funds to complete the buildings. This includes fixing doors, windows and casting the floor. It also includes construction of pit latrines, furnishing the classrooms with desks and chairs and provision of scholastic materials.
Education and Literacy Estimated Budget: USD 14,067
Budget Breakdown:
(a) Completing Classrooms (fixing windows for the new Multi-purpose Hall and plastering Classrooms) - USD 2,720
(b) Furniture (Full and Tables) - USD 6,818
(c) Scholastic Materials - USD 2,105
(d) Hygiene - Pit Latrines - USD 2,424
2. ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
Objective - to economically empower members of the Community and thus improving their standards of living
The proposed project seeks to provide members of the community with agricultural inputs and equipment such as hand tools (e.g. hoes, pangas, slashers etc) and improved Seeds (especially for maize and beans which is their staple food). It also intends to provide initial stock of animals such as Goats, Pigs, Kroiller Chicken and Cattle to enhance commercial animal farming. Effectiveness of the above will be supported by the formation of a Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (SACCO). This will require initial capital for borrowing and lending, staffing, and providing the Saving Society Extension Officers with Motorcycles to enable them access the farms for monitoring.
Economic Empowerment Estimated Budget: USD 15,088
Budget Breakdown:
2.1 Agriculture
2.1.1 Equipment (Hand tools (hoes, pangas, slashers etc) - USD 702
2.1.2 Farm inputs (Improved Seeds) - USD 702
2.1.3 Animal stock (Goats/Pigs/Kroiller Chicken/Cattle) - USD 1,754
2.2. Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (SACCO)
2.2.1 Seed Money/Initial Capital - USD 7,018
2.2.2 Staffing + Training (12 months) - USD 2,105
2.2.3. 2 Motorcycles for extension officers - USD 2,807
3. WATER AND SANITATION
Objective - Providing the Community with access to clean water.
Currently, the Community has only one borehole and one well. Providing the Community with two more Boreholes and Water Harvesting Tanks will therefore be of immense help to members of the Community. This will ensure that the members have access to clean water that is safe for human consumption. It will also assist in promoting the Wash Your Hands campaign which has been so successful elsewhere in Africa (according to UNICEF and WHO) but is yet to succeed in Uganda-due to scarcity of clean water, even for cooking.
Water and Sanitation Estimated Budget: USD 15,981
Budget Breakdown:
3x10,000 Litres Rain Water Harvesting Tanks - USD 5,455
Borehole (Underground water )- USD 10,526
