Project 1: Sanitary Napkins Manufacturing Machine & Sanitary Napkin Incinerators

What needs have been identified?

Salient Features of National Survey by AC Nielsen and NGO Plan India

• Out of the 355 million menstruating women in India, only 12% use sanitary napkins which is abysmal compared to countries like China where majority of women use them

• About 68% Rural women cannot afford sanitary napkins available in the market

• 81% of rural women use unsterilized clothes because of the unaffordability of quality sanitary care

• According to gynecologists, use of alternate sanitary care methods like unsterilized clothes, sand and ash make women susceptible to infections and diseases

• The awareness on basic health and feminine hygiene is very low with 75% rural women lacking adequate knowledge on menstrual hygiene and care

• Adolescent girls in rural India are unable to attend about 50 days of schooling in a year due to inadequate menstrual care

• Research shows Reproductive Tract Infection was 70% more common among those with unhygienic sanitary practices

The tribal regions of Jawhar & Mokhada consist of approximately 21000 girls and women across 52 Panchayats who do not use Sanitary Napkins.

• Providing for 30 Sanitary Napkin Incinerators in the strategic areas of distribution to ensure proper disposal of sanitary napkins

• Educating the tribal girls on Health, Sanitation, Adolescence & their reproductive system by qualified gynaecologists will generate lot of awareness & confidence amongst them

• This project will create direct employment for a 6-8 ladies for running the manufacturing facility of the Sanitary Napkins machine. In addition, it will also create indirect employment for sale of sanitary napkins to the 5000 women

• Education of menstrual hygiene at a primary level will play a key role in the usage of sanitary napkins by rural ladies in the years to come

• Usage of sanitary napkins will reduce the Reproductive Tract infections and other related diseases like cancer etc. that can happen by not maintaining proper hygiene

How will the project address the goal of areas of focus?

Disease Prevention & Treatment

Project 2: New Toilet Blocks

What needs have been identified?

About one billion people in the developing world, or 15 percent of the global population, practice open defecation. India is the country with the highest number of people practicing open defecation: around 600 million people. This is 47% of India's population. Most of it occurs in rural areas where the prevalance is estimated at 65 percent of the population.

Borichaghoda and Khidsa are 2 tribal villages in Jawhar having a total of 60 families with a population of roughly 400 people. RC of Bombay Juhu Beach has in the past done a couple of projects in both these villages by providing solar lighting as well as Solar Pump Potable water distribution system.

Currently the villagers do not have access to any toilet facilities and are used to open defecation. This is definitely a health hazard as well as improper sanitation. Providing for Toilet blocks is one of the Thrust Areas of District 3140 and also a basic necessity of life, therefore our club will provide each of the families of these 2 villages with their own toilet.

How the project will meet the needs & its objectives?

• Primary objective is to provide for toilet facilities for the families of Khidsa and Borichaghoda

• Providing for 1 Toilet block for each of the 60 families of the 2 villages

• Usage of toilets will ensure proper sanitation is maintained and will eliminate diseases related to defecating in the open like diarrhoea

How will the project address the goal of areas of focus?

Disease Prevention & Treatment

Proper usage of toilets will ensure against defecating in the open and will result in reduction in diseases like Diarrhoea etc.

Water & Sanitation

Proper usage of toilets for defecation will ensure that proper sanitation is maintained in the surrounding environment.

Timeline for the Project

• The design for the toilet block with soak pit has already been identified

• The location is in Khidsa and Borichaghoda

• The construction 60 toilet blocks in both the villages will be completed within 6 months of approval of the global grant and disbursal of funds

What the Project Funds will be used for?

• The total cost for construction of 60 toilet blocks and 9 soak pits has been identified at approx. USD 20000.

• The entire project fund will only be used for the construction of these toilet blocks

How will the club members be involved?

• Club members will play an active role in the design and construction of the toilet blocks

• Members will also visit both the villages and meet the villagers, talk to them about the importance of maintaining proper sanitation and to ensure that they use the toilets regularly and stop open defecation

Project 3: Non-Electric Ultra Filtration Drinking Water System

What needs have been identified?

Water related diseases are the most common causes of deaths in India. The paucity of clean water for domestic use has led to the increase in number of deaths in both the urban and rural parts of developing economies like India. Deaths due to water related diseases in India are in the range of nearly 80 %. The 5 most deadly water related diseases are Diarrhoea, Cholera, Malaria, Encephalitis and Filariasis.

RC of Bombay Juhu Beach along with local NGO Pragati Pratishthan have identified 11 villages in Palghar district of Mumbai with a total population of approximately 4400. Over the last few years quite a few Rotary clubs of Dist. 3140 including our club along with Pragati Pratishthan have installed Solar Water Pump distribution systems in these villages to provide potable water to these villagers from distantly located perennial wells. Currently, the quality of water available from these wells is quite sub-standard and resulting in water related diseases to the villagers.

Having access to clean potable water is one of the necessities of life and hence RC of Bombay Juhu Beach has decided to provide each of these villages with a non-electric ultra-filtration based drinking water system.

How the project will meet the needs & its objectives?

• Primary objective is to provide clean potable water to the tribal villages of Palghar

• Providing for 1 Ultra Filtration system in each of the 11 villages identified benefitting close to 4400 villagers

• Providing the villagers with clean water will ensure proper health is maintained by eliminating water borne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, malaria etc.

How will the project address the goal of areas of focus?

Disease Prevention & Treatment

Providing villagers with clean filtered potable water will result in elimination of diseases like Diarrhoea, Cholera, Malaria, Encephalitis etc.

Water & Sanitation

Providing for ultrafiltration purification system will result in having clean potable water to approx. 4400 villagers which is one of the basic necessities of life.

Timeline for the Project

• The vendor for providing the Ultrafiltration system has already been identified

• The location is in 11 tribal villages of Palghar district

• The installation of the Ultrafiltration Drinking Water System in the 11 villages will be completed within 3 months of approval of the global grant and disbursal of funds

What the Project Funds will be used for?

• The total cost for installation of 11 Ultrafiltration Drinking Water system has been identified at approx. USD 27000.

• The entire project fund will only be used for installation of the system

How will the club members be involved?
