Name of the Project: Teachers' Training Program
To conduct a series of sessions for training of teachers for mathematics subject using "MathLab" concept, for primary school teachers from various schools in the city of Pune.
Location: City: Pune State: Maharashtra Country: India
Area of Focus: Basic Education & Literacy
T-E-A-C-H Mission: Rotarians in South Asia have adopted Rotary's "Total Literacy Mission".
In India, "Rotary India Literacy Mission" plans to achieve literacy goals through its "T-E-A-C-H program".
Teachers Support: is one of the many activities under "T-E-A-C-H program". This project aims at improving professional abilities and performance of teachers through better training and use of modern teaching aids so as to enhance the learning outcome of students.
Name of the Organization and Brief Credentials: Rotary Club of Pune Pride (RCPP) is part of Rotary International District 3131. With good local knowledge, RCPP has experience in implementing community service projects directly benefitting deprived sections of society. RCPP has, over the last four years, executed following Global Grant projects amounting to $ 220,000, within schedule & budget, achieving targeted performance, namely
- 'Pediatric Development Centre' for children born with challenges,
- 'Human Milk Bank',
- 'Mobile Blood Collection Van', and
- 'Rotary Blood Bank' (Under process).
Under educational service projects, 'Rotary Math Olympiad' is signature project of RCPP, with 1400 students participating in this activity. "E-Learning" is an activity under "T-E-A-C-H program". Last year RCPP donated 47 e-Learning kits under RDEP (Rotary Distance Education Program) to various rural schools.
RCPP conducted 10 workshops for 400 primary teachers from Municipal Corporation schools under "Teachers' Support". Post training feedback from these teachers was very good and encouraging to take this program on larger scale.
Objectives of the project:
- To enable and arm teachers with advanced teaching skills to improve their teaching abilities,
- To help teachers understand conceptual, pedagogical and linguistic issues that children face in learning mathematics,
- To provide them easy to handle, practical teaching tools, practical demonstrations, support materials, and diagnostic assessment,
- To enable teachers to make every child in class comfortable with mathematics by removing psychological fear about mathematics from students' mind, and
- To make students learn mathematics by 'real life practice', so as to understand it easily.
Need of the Project:
Fear for mathematics in students' mind is known worldwide and this phobia is to be removed at early age. Students will be informed significance and utility of mathematics to understand its necessity and to drive away fear. Teachers will be imparted simple yet effective methods of teaching which work well with students generating interest among them. The program is based on concept of 'Training the Trainer'.
