Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: Bangladesh

Location: Sujanagar, Pabna

Total Budget: $129,000

Areas of Focus: Water and sanitation, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

RC Gulshan Lake City is working with a rural community and wishes to help mainly the poor farming community improve their income and production through an integrated development centering around agriculture. This is expected to help them get out of chronic poverty and malnutrition. The identified problems that the project wishes to address are lack of adoption of modern technologies of crop, including vegetables, production due to lack of knowledge and skills, lack of access to capital/credit on affordable terms and conditions to be able to procure adequate quality seeds and other inputs or hire farm machinery on time. Mechanization can greatly improve timeliness of farm operations and improve income from agriculture. Farm families also lack additional opportunities to augment their family income. Men and women farmers will be trained on modern technologies, new technologies will be demonstrated using a community participatory approach and some small farm equipment will be given to trained entrepreneurs to provide service to others. Training of otherwise unemployed youth and women on agro-based entrepreneurship can create jobs and therefore, such training will be organized and linked with market. The community also suffers from lack of safe drinking water. A micro-credit programme will be run following Rotary principles until the farmers can form their own capital funds through their own small savings. Initial capital is needed. A deep tubewell with an overhead tank exists. Unfortunately, many poor families cannot pay for the costs to get connected and many households are too far from the supply mains. About 80% of the families use make-shift, unhygienic kutcha latrines. The project wishes to address the sanitation and drinking water issue. Lack of education is a critical issue for improving quality of life. The project will run adult education schools to teach the 60% of the men and women who are illiterate. The project will also provide free education of poor children who either cannot go to school due to financial reasons.

The project is designed in a modular concept meaning financing can be done for component(s).

The project will be implemented over a period of two years by RC Gulshan Lake City in partnership with the recently formed RCC and community-based organization being formed. About 10-12 of the club members will participate in various phases of the project. The project will encourage and guide the community to be organized into small community-based organizations pot eventually take control of their own fate. The project will link up with relevant government and non-government organizations.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
