1BOOK4LIFE | Books Change lives

Books change lives

Help needy students to fall in love with reading

We at the Rotary Club of Vitoria - Mata da Praia, Brazil, are supporting the 1BOOK4LIFE program since its start.

1BOOK4LIFE is a digital platform which integrates individuals, social institutions and organizations that want to make a difference by investing in social change toward a common goal: to bring to poor Brazilian children reading materials that they would not have access otherwise.

In Brazil, only 1 in 4 Brazilians are fully literate: reading, writing and math.

There are millions of brazilian schoolchildren that don't have the habit if reading simply because they've ever being given a book, EVER! Click here for more details.

How 1BOOK4LIFE works?

  1. A person is invited to go to the website to place a donation.
  2. The person only needs to select how many students he/she wants to help with a donation of a set of two books (about US$24.00 a set).
  3. The system than selects the adequate books by using a myriad of social and educational indexes to find the best match (see more bellow).
  4. 1BOOK4LIFE than redirects the user to the publisher's website (one of the biggest in Brazil: Melhoramentos), so he/she can continue with the purchase of the sets of books, that will be delivered to the school to be handed to the students.

The books are delivered to ALL students of a given school at the same time! All schools at a given district are invited to enroll, so, in a short period of time, LOTS and LOTS of students will get books, to read, enjoy, exchange with other classmates and even friends from other schools! All that can be tracked by the individual donor, online, at any time.

Why can't one select the books one wants to donate?

  • Because 1BOOK4LIFE delivers different books to every student in a classroom. That way they can exchange books with each other and read more and more! This is called cross-sharing.

How can my Rotary Club get involved?

  • Just go to http://1book4life.com/RC and place a donation. When you do, you'll get a personal special link to be used to invite your fellow rotarians, family, friends and coworkers! It's a true chain of goodness.
  • When a fellow clicks on your special link and also makes a donation, his/her donation will be linked to yours! And so on. You can check the progress of your Club's donations at any time to see how many students were already being helped by your efforts!

All the process is monitored and evaluated by an external company that provide all donors with periodically reports about their personal donations, their network donations, and the program as a whole.

With your grant, 1BOOK4LIFE will continue to invest in the development of schoolchildren in Brazil's most impoverished regions.

PLEASE DO NOT DONATE OUTSIDE THE 1BOOK4LIFE OWN SYSTEM.

Why? Because we want you to be in total control of the results your personal grant/donation will achieve! It's wonderful to see the smile on a child's face when they get their set of books. We want you to have that same experience!

The total budget here is just a first goal, since the program doesn't have an end. It goes forever, since there are always new students that need our help. So, we are going to update this value every time the goal is reached.

Thank you!

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
