Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Guatemala

Location: La Catocha & El Poshte

Total Budget: $35,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health

This project will continue the Rotary work in the Taco River watershed in Guatemala. The small communities of La Catocha and El Poshte are small subsistence farming communities with pervasive poverty in the watershed. CUNORI (El Centro Universitiario de Oriente) is university in city of Chiquimula.

Specific needs to be addressed are:

- It is common practice to cook over an open fire or with an improperly vented stove. Using this cooking method increases indoor air pollution which causes a variety of health issues and early mortality. In addition, these cooking methods use over twice the amount of firewood leading to deforestation, high carbon emissions and high fuel costs.

- Sanitation & hygiene issues at La Catocha School

- Lack of technology at University

Grant Objectives:

- Construction of 60 clean cook stoves for the community of La Catocha.

- Construction of clean cook stoves for schools of La Catocha and El Poshte.

- Repair/construction of bathrooms and sinks at the school in La Catocha

- Purchase of 10 computers for the University, specifically for environmental engineering, which is department that has provided municipality and Rotary with water analysis and land use analysis.

- Training in sanitation and conservation of the environment

La Catocha and El Poshte have participated in water projects with us previously. Both communities have existing COCODEs (Community development councils) which will assist on projects. Both communities have provided unskilled labor on previous projects and the expectation is the same for this project.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
