Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The project area is Bulaga an upcoming urban centre (semi-rural). It is located West of Kampala and about 30 Km from Mityana along Mityana – Kampala highway. The population which is still rapidly growing is made up of sizeable number of school dropouts with no proper employment to talk about.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

This area lacks reliable health services since it is located over 10 kilometres from the nearest health centre IV. A large part of this community (mainly madeup of young girls / women) is non- productive. There is no land for tilling which could be the easiest occupation.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

A local based Community Based Organisation (CBO) called Moving Forward Foundation has spear headed the identification of existing predicaments of the area. The group has with very limited resources embarked upon providing / finding solutions to some of these problems. This Christian based group has for example:

• Has ran several health outreaches with assistance from friendly organisations and the turn-ups have been very encouraging

• Has established a small drug shop

• Is running a small / tiny ill equipped tailoring / craft training scheme (see attachments)

• Has acquired premises to be converted into a fully-fledged health unit.

• Has identified a building which can be a skills training premises for immediate start.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

In a nutshell the overall activity is intended first to provide health services to this community by converting an existing building into a health unit, equipping it and supplying startup drugs / medicine.

The second objective is economic empowerment of the community through skills training. The training will render the community productive.

The overall supervision monitoring of this project will be by Rotarians from RC Mityana.

The activities here are grouped into: Consultative / entry meetings , contractor identification, premises preparations, Provision of supplies (medicines, equipment, tools and multi purpose trainings.

When all approvals have been secured, detailed meetings will be held to clearly spell out roles of each stakeholder.

The contractors will be brought on board to carry out works to create space for the HEALTH unit operations. Startup drugs (seed stocks) and basic equipment will have to be purchased / supplied. This will enable the unit to be operational on completion and commission.

Skill training will be carried out with the aim of making the community self employed with applicable skills of tailoring and making crafts which can be sold. They will be encouraged to form groups for both production and saving cultures.

Trainings in health, sanitation and hygiene will run before during and even after other activities. Other trainings will include forming productive groups, saving cultures and other economic related issues.

The overall impact will be a healthier and productive community leading to rise in standards of living.
