Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Community: CAMPO GASTELUM, syndicature: HERIBERTO VALEZ ROEMRO (EL GUAYABO), municipality: AHOME, state: SINAOLA, country: MÉXICO.

CAMPO GASTELUM is a rural and very poor community of 120 families.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

While attending healthcare medical campaigns that our Club has held in the past two years in marginalized communities in the municipality of Ahome, we realized the serious problem of the lack of decent sanitation facilities in these communities, so we decided to help in solving this problem in coordination with the

Directorate General for Social and Human Development (DIDESOL) of the municipality of Ahome,

identifying the specific needs of a community through the Charter application No. 7222 of the commissioner

Guadalupe Diaz Verduzco dated January 6, 2015 to the Director of Social Development of the municipality

of Ahome requesting the provision of ecological toilets for 30 families in the community. That request was

referred to the Board of Water Supply and Sewerage in the Municipality of Ahome (JAPAMA) asking to

solve the problem with the construction of drainage for this community, but after more than one year this has

not been possible because they do not have land for the location and construction of the lift station and

collectors for the drainage system; this is why we chose the community of Campo Gastelum.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

There is not a local initiative, neither a goverment program, to address these needs.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

This project will reduce infectious diseases through the provision of baths worthy of homes for families living in extreme poverty in

marginalized communities in the municipality of Ahome, Sinaloa, México.

It will include a training program of cleaning and personal hygiene and food preparation for the beneficiary families, as

well as the installation and construction of bathrooms in homes that do not have them.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

Municipality of Ahome.

Rotoplas S.A. de C.V.

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The community will be involved with labor in installing the bases of the bathrooms.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

Yes. Members of our Rotary Club had visited several times the community of Campo Gastelum and encourage the

beneficiaries to come up with ideas, and they have told us of the intention years ago to get from the

goverment ecological toilets that would be the best solution for the problem because the construction of a

drainage systemis not factible.

5. Proposed Start Date: 1-MAR-2017

6. Proposed Completion Date: 29-FEB-2020

Section D: Area of Focus

1. With which area(s) of focus is the proposed activity aligned?

[  ]

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

[X]

Disease prevention and treatment

[  ]

Water, sanitation and hygiene

[  ]

Maternal and child health

[  ]

Basic education and literacy

[  ]

Community economic development

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

Having a decent bathroom, fecal transmission diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery, polio, hepatitis, and salmonellosis will be avoided and other infectious diseases such as dengue and zika will be reduced by avoiding the spread of the transmitting mosquitoes that breed in the latrines. Water and contaminated food are the main vehicles worldwide of bacteria, viruses and parasites, the World Health Organization estimates that between 20% and 80% of deaths are due to diseases of severe fecal-oral transmission and this can be prevented by proper sanitation of the environment. This can be achieved by avoiding the use of latrines, septic tanks and outdoor defecation, reducing sources of infection, eliminating odors and harmful fauna.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

By training the inhabitants on cleanliness, personal hygiene and food preparation, as well as installation and construction of bathrooms in homes that do not have them, will reduce infectious diseases.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

We will be in constant communication with the community representative, Commissioner Guadalupe Diaz

Verduzco, with the direct beneficiaries and with the community, annually visits will be made at least once.

Beneficiaries will be trained in the regular maintenance of their bathroom to make it sustainable with the

environment to prevent contamination of groundwater, this will be taught by the technical staff supplier of the

bathrooms manufacturer.

Beneficiaries will be taught the importance of cleanliness, personal hygiene and food preparation; this will be

in charge of our fellow members of our Rotary Club.

Technical team: maintenance of the bio digester and registration of sludge.

Team health: course of personal hygiene and food preparation.

Health training: the importance of personal hygiene will be learned; why wash your hands after using the

bathroom, oral hygiene and the importance of washing fruits and vegetables.

Follow up with annual training and maintenance reinforcement.

In the annual training and maintenance follow up by our Rotary Club, we will distinguish the three best

maintained bathrooms with a special present (kitchen equipment) for them.

We also consider a gatheering of the Club with the community.
