ICO Center on Cervical Cancer states in its publication Dec. 15, 2016: Afghanistan has 8,77 million women ages 15 years and older who are at risk of develpping cervical cancer. Cervical Cancer ranks as the 2nd most frequent cancer for women in Afghanistan 3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". There is no ongoing regular screening for cervical cancer. There is little information about the need for cervical cancer screening or the need for breast cancer self examination in Afghanistan. 1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community. 12 Afghan OB/GYNs representing 6 hospitals will be trained on cervical cancer screening and treatment. The training will take place in Jalalabad and be provided by Afghan doctors who have already been been so trained.The colposcope, when connected to a smart phone allows for remote diagnosis of cervical cancer. Additionally US Dr. Bruce Kahn, an expert in cervical cancer screening and treatment using these device, will provide ongoing training virtually. Th edoctors will be trained on colposcopes procured through MobileODT and cold coagulators procured through WiSAP. Additionally a public awareness campaign regarding the importance of screening will take place through the public high schools in Jalalabad will take place and through the Nangarhar University Faculty of Educaiton. Teh awareness campaign will also be carried out through tghe doctors from the other cities who are receiving the training 2. The benefiting communities will be involved through cervical cancer screening and treatment and through implementation of the public awareness campaign regarding the benefits of cervical cancer and breast cancer screening. 4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place? This is being handled through through the Afghan Ministry of Public Health 5. 2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus. Early screening for cervical cancer allows for treatment that can eliminate the disease. Regular screening for breast cancer can often catch the disease early increasing the prospects for a full recovery. 1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies). The outcomes will result in early detection of cervical cancer and treatment will result in lives saved. The awareness campaign will result in more early detection, treatment and lives saved. 2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes. Once medical professionals are trained their knowledge and skills will last throughout their professional olives. Moreover, they will be able to train their colleagues as well.
