Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Uganda is a third world country located in Central East Africa. It is bordered by Tanzania and Rwanda in the south, Congo (Kinshasa) in the west , Sudan in the north and Kenya in the east. The benefitting community is the children of Uganda .The Uganda Children's Heart Institute at Mulago Hospital in Kampala will be the recipient of equipment purchased from this grant.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

In 2010, it was determined that the new pediatric surgical department at UHI needed several critical pieces of analytical equipment and we provided these for the Ugandan Doctors. To operate on children in need of open heart surgery, additional pieces of operating room equipment is needed. The program needs specialized equipment in order to provide this type of surgery.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Please refer to the answer in #2. In addition other Rotary Districts with Gift of Life programs are helping to fund missions to train Ugandan doctors to perform these delicate surgeries. Local Doctors and hospital personnel also provide pre and post-operative care for the children.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

Additional equipment is needed by the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Department at Mulago Hospital. This new department is in its infancy and cannot function independently until it is completely equipped.

The community and the children with heart problems in Africa will benefit from the expansion of this department. In the past very few children in this part of Africa(living with heart problems) were able to receive treatment unless their parents had the resources to send them to Europe or the United States. This program will enable local Doctors in a local hospital to save their lives.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

Gift of Life International Inc. has a representative(Grace Agwaru) in Kampala, Uganda who monitored our last year's project and will be monitoring the current project together with the host club. She was a recipient over 35 years ago of a Gift of Life sponsored heart operation in the United States. She is a Rotarian and a Past-President of her Rotary Club.

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The local Rotary club and District 9200 has and will continue to help the

Mulago Hospital provide medical services for children. Since January 2011, Ugandan Doctors with the help of visiting Doctors sponsored by Rotary grants have saved the lives of 33 children using our equipment. When fully equipped and trained these Ugandan surgeons can operate all year around and save many, many more.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

The benefiting community through its hospital personnel and its government have thanked Rotary for what it has done and absolutely want the program to be continued.

5. Proposed Start Date: 30-SEP-2011

6. Proposed Completion Date: 15-JAN-2012

Section D: Area of Focus

1. With which area(s) of focus is the proposed activity aligned?

[  ]

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

[X]

Disease prevention and treatment

[  ]

Water, sanitation and hygiene

[  ]

Maternal and child health

[  ]

Basic education and literacy

[  ]

Community economic development

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

Even with the purchase last year of some equipment, there is still very limited equipment available at the hospital for it to be a full fledged pediatric cardiovascular surgery center. We are hoping to purchase additional equipment both this year and next that has been identified by the visiting surgical team from the U.S. and the Ugandan doctors with whom they are working and training. With the addition of 3 pediatric surgeons, the local doctors and the hospital are already able to provide some surgeries in addition to pre and post-operative care for the children.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

The additional surgical services provided for the children will make the hospital and the Ugandan medical community more independent and efficient.Since January 2011, 33 life-saving heart surgeries were performed on Ugandan children using the equipment funded by our grant. . With the benefit of additional equipment that number will greatly increase.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

Rotarians are part of Gift of Life International (Henry Ebert, a long time Rotarian is a Regional Director)which has evolved into an organization dedicated to four basic principles:(1)Maximize the capacity of existing, Rotary based, Gift of Life Programs worldwide. (2)Add new Gift of Life Programs .(3) Develop partnerships with other like minded NGO's.(4)Tell the collective story of Gift of Life.

Through the Gift of Life programs such as "Our Hearts are in Uganda",we have worked to create sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery programs in those countries. 38 of our current Gift of Life programs worldwide have participated in such programs. Not only have we provided life-saving surgeries but we have begun the process of empowering and training the healthcare professionals in these countries. These programs have provided the ability to affect great change in Uganda. As a result of the 2009 Strategic Conference held by Gift of Life International in Kampala, Uganda , a context was created within Uganda for the development of a regional sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery center at the Uganda Heart Institute (Mulago Hospital).Great strides were not only made in the operating room but also with the Ugandan government. Our project will continue on as in July 2011 the Ugandan government will for the first time have a line item in their national budget for a pediatric cardiac care program. This will ultimately be embodied in a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Ugandan government, the United Heart Institute and Gift of Life International.
