1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". Luuka District is located in eastern Uganda, between 33°20’-33°38’ E and 0°58’-1°18’ N, at an altitude of 1,052-1,098 m. The district borders Kamuli District to the north west. Kaliro District lies to the northeast, Iganga District to the southeast, Mayuge to the south, Jinja District to the southwest and Buyende District to the north. Demography Population density according to the ,most recent population projections of 2009 of the sub-national projections, the 7 sub-counties and 1 town council that make up Luuka district today had a population projection of 291,500 with a sex ratio of 95 males per 100 females and a growth rate of 3.4%. The land population density was 320 persons per SQ Km. Luuka district has a total number of 88 (eighty eight) government primary schools. 174 (one hundred and seventy four) private primary and 47 (forty seven) pre-primary. There are 06 (six) government secondary schools, 31 (thirty one) private secondary schools of which 09 (nine) are under USE, added to the 06 government a total of 15 secondary schools under USE (Universal Secondary Education). The primary sector has a total of 63,322 of in UPE and 39,320 in private schools. Secondary schools have a total of 11,260 in USE and a total of 6,026 in the other remaining secondary schools. Primary school teachers total to 1,309 while secondary are 99 paid by government. The teacher-pupil ratio at primary stands at 1:52 which is in accordance with the MoES (Ministry of Education and Sports Ratios). 2. What community needs have been identified? The problem of poor sanitation in schools has been caused majorly by poor latrine coverage as indicated in the latrine/pupil ratio of 1:119 as opposed to the recommended 1:40 and lack of hand washing facilities in all schools and lack of sanitary pads for adolescent girls.The lack of organised book stores and meal preparation facililites This has therefore resulted into high rate of school dropouts, early marriages, child labour and poor performance in schools. 3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". Strategic intervention • Mass mobilization and sensitization of the stakeholders about their responsibilities majorly parents, teachers, pupils and various leaders at all levels for a common goal. • Capacity building for staff who include all education sector staff. • Strengthening supervision and monitoring of education activities. • A call for more Non-Government Organization (NGO) to boast the sector across all factors of development and performance 1. Supply and installation of water harvesting tanks to 4 selected primary schools to over 5000 school children and surrounding community to improve on health and hygiene and reduce on communicable diseses. 2. Training on water and sanitation facilities water committes on sustainability after grant funds cease 3. Provide a manageable book store and library for the schools for over 5000 students and staff so as to improve on academic performance. 4. To assist the girl child have adequate environment for education by providing and teaching them cheap methods of making menstruation kits and bring services like water nearer them so as to reduce distances to far unsafe wells where they could easily be raped. 5. Help the administration on proper book keeping so that books can serve pupils over a longer period of time. 2. Miisa Foundation is a local NGO that is originated by the children who are born in this area and felt touched at the alarming academic failure rates of the children in the community. They occasionally buy local news papers that have questions and answers and distribute them on monthly basis to the primary schools but they are overwhelmed because of the numbers and the bad road network. They also think that working on the environment and making bookstores better and well organized can solve the problem. 3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". The school management committee will help in formation of water user committees and also the project management structure. They have accepted to maintain all the equipment to be supplied under this grant and make all the necessary maintenance. The benefiting community will provide free labour in excavation and fitting of pipes from the water tanks to the toilet WASH facilities. They will also secure the rooms where the bookshelves will be constructed. 4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place? 2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus. Currently school children do not have a single source of water to use after going to the toilets and hence do not wash hands. Water bone diseases like dysentry, cholera can easily be spread withouht safe water sources. Hence by provision of water and formation of wash committees,the issue of Disease prevention will be handled. This will be an eyeopener even in the surrounding communities about disease prevention and treatment.The sanitary pads will assist in improving the health of the girl child and boys will ideally no longer laugh at them because of the periodical conditions they will be in. School children walk long distances to get water for cooking and cleaning and hence by the time they are back, they are already tired. Water works in tandem with health and children will ably get safe drinking water and also water to utilize for washing their hands to be safe. Through organized book libraries, librarians and school children will be able to identify books quickly and use them for more years as compared to the current stuation. 1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies). Improved academic performance,reduction in diseases caused by lack of water. Improved Hygiene, less school drop out and reduced early marriages and improved economic and community development 2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes. The schools and parents have school management committees that will be trained on usage and sustainability. The school management committee have agreed to ensure maintenance of the given equipment. The district team has assured of continued monitoring of outcomes. Miisa Foundation has the local urge to see improved perfomance in Primary schools shall periodically work with the school management committees as advisory on sustainability.
