Section B: Community Needs

Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf is a Public Institution started in 1990 as initiative of The Kenya Society for the Deaf Children (K.S.D.C). It was the first (Pioneer) and serves the whole of East Africa and I.G.A.A.D Region, with students from other countries like Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Mozambique. It is the highest Vocational Institution for Deaf Youth to train in Technical Courses (TIVET) in Kenya and the only Tertiary Technical Training outlet for deaf students. The Deaf Youth need special attention so as to integrate them into the main economic mainstream of a developing economy. High quality technical Education is one of proven avenues opens to gear this drive. The focus is to provide the deaf with beneficial and meaningful education and which will further empower them with the tangible and relevant "Technical Skills" for Formal or Self Employment", and further integrate them into the mainstream society, taking into consideration their "Special needs" and potentials. The proposed project seeks to expand education and economic opportunities to deaf students, Provide Fresh and reliable water Supply and improve on their infrastructure and foster safety through improving their dorms and feeding facility.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

1. 10 Tuition Rooms

The Institute hosts 150 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, they have no properly designated tuition rooms. Instead workshops that are meant for practical lessons are also used for tuition (theory teaching). 10 tuition rooms would suffice to provide the needed space for proper teaching. There is a building for tuition rooms that was started by the Constituency development fund by the government and was not completed. Completing this building would provide some needed tuition rooms.

There is a foundation for a library which stalled. The needs assessment reporter suggested that given the critical need for tuition rooms, this could be completed as block for the rooms.

2. Repair of the Hostels and the dinning room

Hostels which were constructed 25 years ago when the institute was established have dilapidated. They have cracked walls, the curtains are torn or is simply not there, the roofs leak during times of rain. There is a need to repair the cracked walls and replace the roof.

Dining hall is in pathetic state because of broken rovers- windows, lack of tables and chairs for use during meals. The improvising that students undertake during meals undermines the purpose of their holistic foundation. There is a need to do repairs on the dining hall and to provide the needed furniture.

3. Equipping the dinning Hall with Furniture

The students share the limited furniture, sometimes they eat in shifts and while standing.

4. Provide the needed equipment for tuition

These include workshops for the following departments: Food and Beverages, Building and Construction and Engineering, Clothing and Textiles, Business, and Audiology. There is a need of equipment. The Institute also needs more equipment for various laboratories and workshops.

5. Get a sustainable solution for the water supply.

Drillicon drilling company did a needs assessment and the report indicates:

1. Drill a new Borehole

2. Repair the Existing Borehole

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".
