Step 3: Project overview

Tell us a little about your project. What are the main objectives of the project, and who will benefit from it?

The Valentim Gentil Basic Health Unit has a demand for approximately 550 ultrasound exams in several medical specialties, with emphasis on the areas of orthopedics,

gynecology / obstetrics and pediatrics.

These tests are sent to the Unified Health System (SUS) where, even in more urgent situations, patients wait between 90 and 180 days for care.

The objective of this project is to meet this demand and offer prompt care, reduce the time for diagnosis and treatment of diseases, reduce the risk of worsening and deaths and the cost of treatments.

It will benefit the entire local population, now around 16000 people, and can extend the service to neighboring municipalities with the same need through the formation of a consortium to defray the professional and other expenses necessary for the full operation of the equipment.

Step 10: Sustainability

Humanitarian Projects - Project Planning

Describe the community needs that your project will address.

People wait 90 to 180 days to undergo ultrasound examination, having to move to another city, many of them are ill, elderly or people with mobility difficulties. With the availability of the device, dislocations will be avoided, care will be considerably faster and, with the early diagnosis of any disease that the exams will provide, the onset of treatment will be much faster and with the abbreviation of the diagnosis and consequently of the many complications will be avoided, which will generate considerable savings to the community health sector, which can reinvest in improvements for itself.

How did your project team identify these needs.

After surveys to identify deficiencies in the community, talking to people related to the health area is noticed the delay for several tests to be performed. Among these, the ultrasonography also drew attention to the high demand in the service, with a queue of more than 550 people. The public health system in Brazil is very inefficient and with the strong financial crisis that the country is going through, this has worsened.

The knowledge of the numbers presented is that it has taken into account the importance of a project along these lines, which could benefit not only the local community, but several neighboring communities that suffer the same lack and that can also be met, considerably increasing the number of beneficiaries in more than 100% (one hundred percent).

How were members of the benefiting community involved in finding solutions.

Looking for numbers and information with local authorities on what measures could bring benefits and especially listening to complaints from people served by the Health System.

How were community members involved in planning the project.

Giving opinions and ideas about what they would like to have available in healthcare.

Please describe the training, community outreach, or educational programs this project will include.

There are already community programs that with the data of this project will be expanded by the community

Budget

Will you purchase budget items from local vendors? Explain the process you used to select vendors.

We sought suppliers of well-known suitability and professionalism, based on information in the community and in consumer protection bodies

Did you use competitive bidding to select vendors? If no, please explain.

-

Please provide an operating and maintenance plan for the equipment or materials you purchased for this project. This plan should include who will operate and maintain the equipment and how they will be trained.

The operation of the equipment will be done by a medical professional hired by the municipal administration, who will also be responsible for the maintenance and acquisition of the necessary materials for their operational operation.

Describe how community members will maintain the equipment after grant-funded activities conclude. Will replacement parts be available?

The maintenance of the equipment will be the responsibility of the municipal administration, which will also provide spare parts.

If the grant will be used to purchase any equipment, will the equipment be culturally appropriate and conform to the community's technology standards? If yes, please explain. If no, describe how the project team will help community members adopt the technology.

Yes will be. The community is fit to receive the benefit. An authorized medical professional will be responsible for operating the equipment, allowing the community to receive all the benefits it offers.

After the project is completed, who will own the items purchased by grant funds? No items may be owned by a Rotary district, club, or member.
