Tell us a little about your project. What are the main objectives of the project, and who will benefit from it?

The proposed project entitled “Clean Hands Save Lives” donation of 55 units Stainless Steel Handwashing Facilities aim to benefit 30,430 learners from kindergarten to senior high school and 1118 teachers in 55 Schools of San Jose City Nueva Ecija, Philippines.

The department of education requires all school to have at least 1 handwashing facility with 10 faucets for every 100 students. With this requirement all schools needed to have at least 305 handwashing facilities, at present only 50% of the total requirements are installed. The proposed 55 units will be beneficial to students to make sure that they are in safe condition against diseases cause by any viruses like covid-19 and bacteria.

This project will be installed at the entrance gate of each school to make sure that their hand is sanitized before entering and leaving the school.

On this project, we will conduct WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) SUMMIT CONTEST an awareness drive campaign to improve the hygiene behavior and education of the students. This activity will be conducted during the launching of the project and in the succeeding years to be done annually. The WASH SUMMIT is composed of Poster Making Contest, Essay Writing Contest, Motivational Video Making Contest and other information drive program that will enhance the awareness of each student on the proper sanitation and hygiene.

Objectives:

1. To conduct project that helps the learners to protect themselves on any diseases from bacteria and viruses that may harm their lives.

2. To provide attractive WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) facility made from durable and high quality stainless steel to be installed in the entrance gate of all public school in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija.

3. To educate learners about the importance of handwashing, tooth brushing and drinking clean water to prevent any diseases caused by viruses and bacteria during the WASH SUMMIT CONTEST a program to be conducted during the launching of the project and in the succeeding years to continue educating learners.

4. To promote and improve sanitation and hygiene of all learners in public schools

We chose DepEd San Jose City Division Office because all schools in the project location is under this office. Their office will delegate all school principals and head teacher to coordinate properly on the planning, implementation and the operation and maintenance of the equipment.

Humanitarian Projects - Project Planning

Describe the community needs that your project will address.

The 55 public schools in San Jose City have 30,430 students and 118 teachers. The handwashing facility requirements of the Department of Education 1 unit with 10 faucets in every 100 students that needs to have 305 washing facilities. As of now only 50% of the requirements are existing.

How did your project team identify these needs.

The additional 55 handwashing facilities to be donated will be a substantial help to all students in this area to comply with the requirements to make sure that all students is in safe condition and out of danger for having life threatening diseases

How were members of the benefiting community involved in finding solutions.

55 units additional handwashing equipment is not enough to comply 100% in the requirements of the department of education. The benefiting community is not stopping in finding sponsors and raising fund to make sure the needs will be complied.

How were community members involved in planning the project.

1.Local Government unit of San Jose City are now providing deep wells and water tank to each schools and barangays, access to water is no longer a problem. What they need is the handwashing facilities to ensure their health. The Rotary Club of San Jose Golden Harvest donated 9 Units of Stainless Steel Hand Wash Facility distributed to 7 schools, 1 in public market and 1 in City Health office. Our Club wishes to provide this facility to all schools so that the learners and even teachers will have an access to proper handwashing facilities.

2.The Rotary Club of San Jose Golden Harvest will donate stainless steel handwashing facility with 10 faucets.

3.We will conduct training to members of PCTA and school personnel in-charged about the proper repair and maintenance. Operation Manual and Maintenance will also be provided.

Yes, we will work in coordination with any related initiative in the community.

Because of the lack of facilities ,the Department of Education launch their project (WinS) Wash in Schools Project to encourage all principals, teachers and PTCA to initiate to raise funds and campaign on the importance of proper hygiene among the learners as well as their parents.

There are 55 schools in San Jose City Nueva Ecija, only around 50% of this schools have proper handwashing facility.

Our club already donated 7 units of this handwashing facility to schools, During the pandemic we also donated 2 units to the City Health Office for the front liners and in Public Market.

This project entitled CLEAN HANDS SAVE LIVES” will help all learners of San Jose City to have an accessible handwashing and hygiene facility. Today viruses like Covid-19 and bacteria brings fear and danger to the people in the community specially the children. This project will play vital role in promoting the importance of hygiene and sanitation among learners and also to their parents.

Learners will have an accessible high quality and attractive WASH Facility to remind them to always to wash their hands from time to time and to protect themselves from the danger of having any diseases and health problem.

This project will conduct WASH SUMMIT CONTEST wherein all beneficiary schools will meet together during the first launching of the project. Various activities will be conducted to promote the importance of Hand Washing, Personal Hygiene and Drinking Clean Water in fighting diseases cause by any virus and bacteria:

3.Motivational Video Making Contest to be posted in Youtube, Facebook and other social media websites. Most number of views on their video will have a big chance on winning the contest.

The activity will be done yearly after the implantation of the project. Schools with non Functional equipment cannot join in the contest. In this we can make sure that the donated equipment will be functional throughout the years.

This awareness drive program will play a vital role in promoting the importance of Hygiene and sanitation among the students, teachers and the community

How were these needs identified?

Proper hygiene and sanitation is one of the most important factor for the students to be considered to make sure that their lives is not in danger. During the pandemic millions of people died all over the world.

Handwashing has always been one of most effective ways of keeping diseases at bay. It is a simple act that pays in dividends when it comes to keeping ourselves healthy and safe. Handwashing is also one of the key cornerstones disease privation against any viruses.

Now, more than ever as we embrace the new normal and live with viruses like COVID-19, hand hygiene needs to become an integral part of our daily routine and our lives, as we live through this pandemic, and beyond, to protect us from diseases.

WASH SUMMIT CONTEST will be done during the launching and in succeeding years.

OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE PLAN

1.The Stainless steel handwashing Facilities is easy to operate. it is composed of 10 faucets and connected to durable stainless pipes at the bottom. The possible maintenance needed for this equipment are the faucets and flexible pipe replacement.

2.Broken faucet or flexible pipe is easy to replace and available to the local hardware, It can be done by the school personnel or members of the PCTA trained by the Club training Committee.

3.The Club will conduct training on the operation and maintenance of the handwashing facility for the teachers, school personnel in-charged and the members of PCTA in each school.

4.For sustainability, each school is required to maintain the functionality of the facility. The club will conduct annual WASHSUMMIT CONTEST for poster making, essay writing and motivational video making. We will also conduct trainings and seminar on operation and maintenance during the activity. Schools with non-functional equipment cannot join in this contest

The trained school personnel, members of PCTA will maintain the equipment after grant funded.

Th club will continue monitor each equipment donated to make sure the success of the project.

The equipment is designed using durable stainless steel 304. It is culturally appropriate and conformed to the community's technology standard. It easy to operate and maintained.
