Land and water scarcity for effective agriculture in the rural communities of the country- By instilling knowledge and use of both land and water conserving technologies for this agribusiness. 2. Food insecurity, 3. To drive economic development of this rural community
The project is a sustainable means of providing a balanced food source to the indigent households in the 13 neighbouring villages, as well as provision of job security, knowledge and income through sale of excess produce to the commercial markets for sustainability. The otherwise unskilled and jobless people will be equipped with knowledge and skills to sustain their livelihoods Which area of focus will this project support?

Humanitarian Project The Project will be set up at Ha Mohatlane in the Berea District of Lesotho. The site is a secure and developed Mission of the Anglican Church of Lesotho, run by the Durham Link- Lesotho. They have consented to housing the project alongside the Church, Primary School and Technical Institute on site. All parties set to start upon security of the finances.

Why did you choose to partner with this organization and what will its role be? 1. Fresh Ministries have developed a prototype of the Aquaponics project which they have availed to charitable organizations such as Rotary to use to address food insecurity and sustainable agriculture practices, they will construct, erect, train and develop as well as monitor the functionality of the project 2. The Anglican church through the Durham Link are keen to partner with Rotary on this project, they offer their site at Ha Mohatlane in Berea, as well as the staff that will be availed for training and running the project. The facility will remain property of the church beyond the project cycle Partners (Optional) List any other partner that will participate in this project. The Project is run by the 3 Rotary Clubs in Lesotho: 1. The Rotary Club of Maseru 2. The Rotary Club of Maloti-Maseru 3. The Rotary Club of Mantsopa-Maseru WE are currently soliciting the partnerships of Local Funding and partnership outside Rotary, with Synergistic objectives. Volunteer Travelers (Optional) Provide name, email of traveler(s). 1. Provision for 3 Persons to travel to Johannesburg initially for training 2. Allowance for supervisory visits by Technical staff for monitoring and maintenance Names and contacts to be provided once ascertained Describe this person's role in the project. They will be the Facility: 1. Operators to attend the Training of trainers in Johannesburg 2. Project supervisor teams to conduct periodic checks on the facility and produce outlets 3. Humanitarian Projects - Project Planning Describe the community needs that your project will address. - Food insecurity by producing fresh, locally grown food year round, the facility will reduce food scarcity and improve access to nutritious options - Climate Smart Resource practices- use of technology to save the environment through innovative technology -Economic development and sustainability, the community will be in a better space to cater for their livelihoods and future generations. Education: the facility will be a source of inspiration and learning for current and future members of the community. How did your project team identify these needs. Through a combination of community engagement, local collaboration drive by the 3 Rotary Clubs in our community. Contact and discussions with: - Durham link Ha Mohatlane- a historic site for small scale agri-projects for community benefit- supported by Rotary Club of Maloti, they wished to scale up as the community need grew beyond their means - Community, Local leadership forums and NGO donor partners engaged to coin the project - Analysis of the environment and climatic conditions called for measures to conserve both soil and water, thus the choice of project and partnering with Fresh Ministries How were members of the benefiting community involved in finding solutions. 1. Community meetings called by the Durham link centre and Rotary 2. Local Advisory groups comprising Village Chiefs and their committees to fine tune the needs and thus the project 3. Church leadership and Site management How were community members involved in planning the project. 1. Several consultations to gather community needs, values, traditions and expectations as well as inputs to solutions to the needs and challenges 2. Identification of local resources and gaps 3. Possible collaborations 4. Seek community engagement especially with regards security and promise to support the project into the future. Will you work in coordination with any related initiative in the community? If yes, briefly describe the other initiatives and how they relate to this project. If no, please explain. Are local initiatives not addressing these needs? Or, if they are, why did you decide not to work with them? YES Rotary will work closely with the facility management and Fresh-Ministries to ensure success of all aspects of the project Rotary Clubs will partner with the Facility management to identify members in the community for training to run the project,assist to set up a sales and distribution supply chain facility. A total buy in and support will result in security and sustainability Please describe the training, community outreach, or educational programs this project will include. The core group to run the project will undergo a 2 week intensive training at the Fresh-Ministries centre in Randburg, South Africa which will be followed by a practical training week at an existing Aquaponics facility prior to implimentation at Ha Mohatlane. This will be followed by on the job virtual training on site. This core group will then form the core trainers for the community and interested individuals. There shall be periodic monitoring of skills and knowledge by Fresh Ministries through out the life of the project. This is all included in the project fund. How were these needs identified? identification was through Community consultative meetings at various levels, building on the experiences with simple agricultural projects the centre had run for community benefit. Rotary was previously involved, and was considered a trusted partner by the site Management What incentives (for example, monetary compensation, awards, certification, or publicity), will you use, if any, to encourage community members to participate in the project? There will be the following incentives for community buy in and participation in the project: 1. Offer of salaried jobs to those who will run the project- salaries will be from proceeds of sales, not from project funds 2. Trained persons will be certificated for attending as well as acquiring the relevant competencies 3. Media coverage of the project is part of the plan- both electronic and print media 4. Indigent members of the community will be incentivized with a portion of the produce 5. Public meetings to inform, plan as well as take advise from the community will be part of the operations List any community members or community groups that will oversee the continuation of the project after grant-funded activities conclude. 1. The Anglican Church of Lesotho (ACL) through the Parish Priest of St Agnes in Berea, who is the regional head overseeing the Mohatlane Mission of the ACL 2. The management of the Durham Link Lesotho, through the Mohatlane centre management 3, The Village chief of Ha Mohatlane The Rotary Clubs of Maseru, Maloti and Mantsopa (3 Clubs) Budget Will you purchase budget items from local vendors? Explain the process you used to select vendors. Yes We Will purchase budget items from Local vendors in the following manner 1. Specialized items on the budget eg the Modular unit and fittings for aquaponics and hydroponics will be procured from Fresh-Ministries manufacturing centre in Randburg, South Africa. No local manufacturers in Lesotho 2. Other items will be sought in Lesotho on an open bid system where price, quality and availability of the item are the criteria of choice. Where possible we shall call for quotations indicating the said criteria. Did you use competitive bidding to select vendors? If no, please explain. YES Please provide an operating and maintenance plan for the equipment or materials you purchased for this project. This plan should include who will operate and maintain the equipment and how they will be trained. Fresh Ministries undertakes to monitor and maintain the specialized equipment Other equipment will be serviced, maintained and replaced from proceeds of the sale of produce. These will be done with local companies Describe how community members will maintain the equipment after grant-funded activities conclude. Will replacement parts be available? The project is intended as self sustaining from production and sale of products, this will provide for replacements and servicing beyond the project cycle. Fresh-Ministries will still be in the partnership for a long haul, the intension is to roll out the project to other locations If the grant will be used to purchase any equipment, will the equipment be culturally appropriate and conform to the community's technology standards? If yes, please explain. If no, describe how the project team will help community members adopt the technology. The technology is new to the particular community, and part of the project activity is to inform and educate community leaders and general community about the technology. With the high level of soil erosion in Lesotho and the advent of water scarcity, it is apt the the rural community adapt to new technologies, and this project aims at that. Fortunate the Ministry of Agriculture in Lesotho is strongly advocating for innovative and climate change sensitive means of agriculture, and on their part actively promoting the technology After the project is completed, who will own the items purchased by grant funds? No items may be owned by a Rotary district, club, or member. The Anglican Church of Lesotho through the Durham Link Lesotho which runs the Mohatlane Centre. Funding Have you found a local funding source to sustain project outcomes for the long term? If yes, please describe this funding source. We are in search of such long term partnerships, there are promises. We feel it is prudent to have these. Will any part of the project generate income for ongoing project funding? If yes, please explain. The project is intended to produce vegetables and fish (fresh water trout) that will be sold to individuals and commercial outlets to sustain the centre Is your economic and community development activity a microcredit project?
