Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Luuka district is a remote rural based district in eastern Uganda with a population of 241,453 the majority of whom are women numbering 124,863. It is proposed that the project will take place in the 2 sub-counties of Bulongo and Nawampiti in four primary schools namely: Buyunze (767 students), Kamwirungu (1,048), Buyoola (589) & Ikunya (848 students)

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Poor infrastructure with shortages of adequate numbers of pit latrines, urinals, washrooms and water sources, the few of which are shared with the local surrounding communities. The few that are available are mostly dilapidated and in poor condition. Most schools have a poor hand washing culture, poor hygiene especially after use of toilet facilities. There is lack of awareness of the dangers of mainly water borne diseases. the dirty water sources have negatively affected the learning environment

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The government has tried to put up a few pit latrines but their numbers are not at all commensurate with the community needs

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

It is proposed to put up 4 stance pit latrines with washrooms and 20,000L rain water harvesting tank at Buyunze primary school, 5 stance pit latrines plus washrooms in Kamwirungu primary school, 5 stance latrines plus washrooms in Buyoola primary school and a girl's washroom/urinal with a 20,000L rain water harvesting tank at Ikonya primary school. the needs to be addressed will be better water & sanitation habits, facilities, prevention of water borne diseases, increased awareness and basic education in safe hygiene practices. The communities will be further trained in the making of burnt bricks using murram, a team will also be trained on the job to ensure proper maintenance of the established infrastructure to aid in sustainabilty of the project in the long run. This is a joint project with the Rotaract club of Source of the Nile.A "first flush system" that ensures that the first water coming off the roof (bringing the bulk of dirt) does not make it into the tank by diverting it into a down pipe ensuring a cleaner general standard of water in the tanks.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT), a UK based organisation with a branch in Uganda with over ten years of experience in Uganda doing similar projects in various other districts like Kamuli

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The schools will be expected to provide storage facilities for the items to be used in the various construction activities, acceptable accomodation for the workers carrying out the construction, water for drinking and building, feeding those actively involved in the project implementation. Lastly the schools will be expected to maintain all the constructed facilities after the project closes, possibly with the aid of established Rotary Community Corps (RCC's) at the respective facilities. The surrounding communities will have access to the water via a separate external tap using some clever plumbing techniques whilst ensuring that the schools retain the bulk of access to the water. A training component where a number of young women & men will be given basic skills in block laying & site portering is also included. There will be separate entire latrines for girls and separate ones for boys as well

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

Yes they all have by answering in the affirmative to the interviewer administered pretested questionnaires provided during the needs assessment exercise. Memoranda of understanding will be signed with the various schools involved to ensure sustainability, security of the facilities and 'ownership' of the projects is maintained on completion.

5. Proposed Start Date: 15-OCT-2015

6. Proposed Completion Date: 15-APR-2016

Section D: Area of Focus

1. With which area(s) of focus is the proposed activity aligned?

[  ]

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

[X]

Disease prevention and treatment

[X]

Water, sanitation and hygiene

[  ]

Maternal and child health

[X]

Community economic development

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

Better water and sanitation facilities, more, safer sources of adequate amounts of drinking water, a better hand washing culture will greatly decrease the incidence of preventable water borne diseases like salmonellosis, shigellosis, ring worms and cholera while training in skills like brick making and laying will ensure basic education in the importance of maintaining the project, it's sustainability, reduced idleness and potentially community empowerment most especially to those youths who may not have had the opportunity to make significant advances in career development

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

Better hygiene, water and sanitation practices, reduced incidence of disease, a better learning environment a more enlightened, more educated, more aware community leading a better quality of life. This will lead to lower school drop out rates, less idleness among the youth, a more productive society with higher levels of income and increased life expectancies

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

TEAM ("Together Everyone Achieves More"). The essence will be that evey one will be expected to do their part including the sponsoring Rotary and Rotaract club (It is expected to be a joint project with the Rotaract club of Source of the Nile), the beneficiary schools and communities, the local governments and hopefully any international partners we may acquire. HYT is expected to provide the required expertise in the construction as well as training the communities and helping them acquire basic skills like brick making
