The small villages at Javar district in Thane are located in northern part of Sanhyadri ranges, in Thane district about 150 km from Mumbai, India. The region is bestowed with good quality of soil, but there is perennial shortage of water for agricultural activities as water does not percolate due to slope of the mountains and hard rock bed.
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood and lack of water compels the locals to migrate to cities for the sake of survival. The city offers them bread but along with it comes miserable lifestyle, unhealthy living conditions and illnesses.
The topography provides number of brooklets on which small dams can be built to harvest the water. The water harvested will be enough to do vegetable farming and develop fruit orchards which will generate income for the families settled in the area. They stand a chance of leading a respectable life without relocating to the cities.
This project proposes to develop cement dams, chain link dams and wells for the residents of these villages for water conservation.
