   Egypt - Menia

Give Kafr Libs a Sunrise

$35,671

Kafr Libs is a small village 18 Km south the city of Abu Korkas in Menia, Egypt. Its population is around 8000. 60% of the population are illiterate. The average income of almost all households is in the range of LE180/month (36$). 60% of the houses are very primitive, inadequate and totally unsafe.

In the village of Kafr Libs likewise in rural areas of many developing countries, people are living in extreme conditions of poverty. Among the main problems causing this situation are:

•Lack of access to clean water

•Lack of proper sanitation

•Inadequate housing conditions

•Illiteracy and lack of awareness

•Unemployment and lack of secured means of income generation

The provision of clean water is essential to a society’s well being. Clean water reduces child mortality, combats water-borne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and Guardia and helps to ensure a sustainable environment. Access to clean water also promotes gender equality as it enables women to have more time to accomplish other tasks such as schooling.

The segment of society suffering the most are the women, who sometimes have to walk long distances to carry dirty and often disease saturated water back to their homes and loved ones. Moreover, they are often compelled to wait until sunset before they can take a long and dangerous walk to the fields to relieve themselves due to the lack of proper indoor sanitation.

Moreover, homes in the village of Kafr Libs are utterly inadequate. Many homes are about to collapse, exposing the lives of many children to extreme danger, other homes are roofless, and walls are pest inhabited.

Such terrible living conditions leave back a sick, desperate, unmotivated community incapable of facing its challenges or taking steps towards well being, reformation or development. Moreover, renal failures are among the most common mishaps marking the community in these areas.

Mothers’ illiteracy contributes to the overall problem. “We use the term literacy here in all its senses, not just alphabet literacy. It includes health and environmental literacy around water and sanitation, personal and environmental hygiene all the way to the rights-based literacy....” – Business Solutions for Human Development Report 2007

On the other hand mothers in this poor village are an idle workforce in the society. Income generation responsibility lies solely on the fathers, who are in most cases incapable of providing their families with even life’s bare necessities.

Main Objectives:

•Installation of 100 clean water connections to 100 families.

•Installation and maintenance of 60 latrines.

•Revolving 60 loans to start income generating activities tailored and feasible for women.

•Conducting awareness sessions: a special curriculum for women on basic health care, healthy environment, family, child upbringing, proper nutrition, waste management, legal rights, etc.

•Conducting a CLE project (litracy program created in south east Asia, proven very efficient) for 30 Women from the village.

Through this project we aim at inscribing a simple model for village development that can be copied and reiterated by other funding sites or businesses as part of their corporate social responsibility towards their community.
