Mountain of Books

$10,000

This project, "A Mountain of Books" aims to improve the literacy skills of disadvantaged students by providing books to schools, libraries and reading centres serving children from low-income homes in Kingston & St. Andrew. The books will be targeted for children between the ages 6 – 12 years.

Reading is an important skill that benefits children in many ways, and is considered an essential component of a good education. It is the foundation upon which other academic skills are built. The Mountain of Books will provide an avenue to promote literacy and embrace reading as fundamental to literacy.

Teachers will be providing classroom instruction using the books as a focal point. Childern will be able to take a book home to read and study as enhancement of the classroom instruction. Many childern have never had a book at home and having one in their family environment will enhance the family's view of education.
