Malawi Village Drinking Water
$16,000
The project will provide a sustainable drinking water solution for 8 remote villages in central Malawi. Village populations average about 100 families. Villagers are subsistence farmers with an average family income of $30/month. Village water is generally obtained from hand-dug holes or pits that are no more than mud holes. If these holes can be retrofitted or replaced with a sealed well and hand-pump, the public health benefits are immediate. Earlier experience from MG#61365 which funded construction of large rainwater collection tanks and household drinking water filters, suggests a strategy which combines capped shallow wells with household water filters and rainwater collection to create a year-round supply of potable water for poor, remote villages. To enhance project sustainability, a small village health clinic will be provided in each project village and training provided to a volunteer village health worker. |
