Recognising the need for treatment of MDR-TB patients RC Chandigarh Central (RCCC) intiated project for treatment of such patients with Govt. Medical College & Hospital(GMCH) at Chandigarh for patients living in Chandigarh . Finding that treatment of MDR-TB is being undertaken at GMCH MDR-TB patients from neighboring states of J& K , Punjab , HP, Haryana , UP , Uttaranchal , Rajasthan & even MP .As mentioned earlier the treatment of MDR-TB is very complicated , expensive , difficult, time consuming and carries poor out-come viz-a-viz to the ordinary form of drug susceptible tuberculosis. The reasons for joining hands by RCCC with GMCH for the treatment of MDR-TB requires specialized medical advise & care using standardized second-line drug regimens given under daily. The 2nd line drugs are comparatively less potent , carry high degree of intolerance and toxicity rate. There are around 5 % MDR-TB cases out of already treated / maltreated TB cases in India, which is sizeable proportion & they do not respond to treatment they currently receive.
The first line of drugs used for treatment of TB are as under:
1. Isoniazid 2. Rifampicin 3. Pyrazinamide 4. Streptomycin 5. Ethambutol
They all are used in the form of tablets.
These medicines are distributed free under Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) almost in 99 % of India.
The drugs used for treatment of MDR-TB are as under :
1. Ethionamide 2. Ofloxacin 3. Cycloserin 4. Kanamycin 5. Capriomycin 6. PAS Granules
The medicines 1 to 3 are used in tablet form , 4 & 5 are injectables and 6 are granules.
The above medicines for treatment of MDR-TB patients are used in combination with first line of drugs. |
