Ceramic Water Filters
$10,000
A specially made ceramic disk holding 8 liters of water fits into the top of an ordinary 20 liter plastic container which has a spigot at the bottom and a cover. Water is poured into the ceramic disk and the unit produces 2 liters per hour of clear, potable water. The water is kept in the bottom part of the plastic container and, by refilling the ceramic disk periodically, a family can obtain up to 48 liters per day. The $1,000 will provide about 25 families with filters and this includes education as to the need of the filter, instructions on it use and maintenance (cleaning the container weekly with soap and water and the ceramic disk with a dry rag), and installation. The project is supervised by an NGO (as well as by Rotarians) who also verify through periodic visits the proper usage of the unit. |
