TT Community Water Project
$200,000
The purpose of this project is to address the desperate need of the villagers of Tharaka District to complete a gravity water system for domestic and irrigation use started May 12, 2004, when a small group of concerned villagers and farmers who own small plots of land within the surrounding District met at Turimatweru Village and decided to initiate a water project because of the local lack of potable drinking water for domestic use and water for irrigation of crops. The project will provide domestic potable drinking water and water for irrigation to approximately 9,000 villagers in this semi-arid area of Kenya, as well as an adequate water supply for a community health facility and primary school to be constructed. At present because of chronic drought, potable water is in short supply and farmers often face low food production because there is no means of irrigation. Irrigation will increase food production and help to eliminate the extreme poverty in the area. Clean, safe water is also a vital component to running a medical facility and school. |
