 This application is for financial assistance to provide additional toilet accomodation for pupils and teachers at a non-government sponsored school situated in an township on the outskirsts of Durban, South Africa.
The majority of the pupils are from the poorest of families who eke out an existance and are, in many cases orphaned and looked after by extended family. The South African Government pay the salaries of the teachers only and the school relies on fund raising projects and local and national charities and what is forthcoming from the local community for the balance of income required for its' operations.
The Rotary Club of Umhlanga has assisted by providing computers and initated a successful project to involve the local community in the re-painting of the dilapidated classrooms.
There are a total of 1722 pupils and 45 teachers and administration staff sharing a total of 20 toilets and 20 wash hand basins, with no separate teacher's facilities.The number of toilets are totally inadequate for this size of school.
This project is to provide an additional 10 toilets and 8 wash hand basins in the existing toilet block which at present houses some disused showers, together with a new building to provide 2 male and 2 female staff toilets with wash hand basins.
The benefit will not only be for the school but for the community who utilise the school premises out of school hours.
Funding will not come from the South African Government as the school was started as a community project and has been financied by the local community throughout its' existance.
The project is to be constructed by a local building contractor who is an active member of the community supporting the school, - See attached quotation from Donga Construction in the amount of
SAR 333,500.00 inclusive of value added tax.
The quotation is based upon a standard South African Government specification for school buildings to a layout and sketch plan agreed jointly by a building consultant (Messrs Hardstone, Mthethwa - Quantity Surveyors) and Donga Construction.
The total contract period including drawing plans, site survey and municipal approval is expected to be 9 months. |
