preparation and administration of any project. We also have plenty of needy community
whom the Rotarians can help to alleviate their sufferings. But we do lack in raising to
much of funds. We understand that you are eager to help many other clubs in such
community projects as mentioned above. We would like to tender our sincere request
to help us financially in any of the following two projects : (1) Providing water for
agricultural and other use through construction of check dams at proposed sites.

MATCHING GRANT APPLICATION FOR PROVIDING WATER FOR AGRICULTURE
AND OTHER USE THROUGH CONSTRUCTING CHECK DAMS AT PROPOSED SITES.
Explanation :
Project Site : Villages in Thane District of Maharashtra State of India.
Increase in population, awareness about hygiene, and changed lifestyle has resulted in rise in demand
of water for drinking and other domestic purpose in villages in Thane District. Ground water is the
main and sometimes only source of water. Conventional shallow open wells have now given way to
deep bore wells to meet this rising demand of water. Overexploitation of water causes the groundwater
levels to drop. We feel that while we cannot overlook the problem posed by falling groundwater levels,
water cannot be denied to the rural poor population. We therefore intend to construct check dams creat
a small water body behind them. The water infiltrates into the subsoil thus recharging ground water.
Our District has already constructed about 50 check dams in the area. The results are encouraging.
Ground water table is observed to increase by about 4 m. in the vicinity of 300-500 m from check dam.
The sites have already been identified for check dams in the villages of Dugad and Dhoke.
Local community shall be involved in the project during construction phase for supervision, offer labour.
Local self government body at village level shall be involved in the project. They will undertake to
maintain the structure and ensure proper use of the water harnessed.
Members shall visit project sites, to oversee the work ensure proper quality. Offer expertise for Geophysical
Investigations Civil construction, required before, during and after construction work of the
check dams. Interact with villages to educate them about importance of ground water recharging.
