The Umvoti Aids Centre is a Non Governmental Organisation(NGO) working with HIV/Aids in the rural areas of Umvoti, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Our region is at the epicentre of the Aids pandemic. It is our children who are suffering. They are subjected to witnessing illness and ultimate death of their parents. Usually children are sheltered from this. They are left alone, orphaned, sad, frightened and often angry. We have to help these children as they are the world's future. The number of orphans in Umvoti is ever increasing and already 42% of our children are orphans.
To this end, we have 3 projects running to help our children infected and affected by HIV/Aids but with the increase in numbers, we need help.
1) Child Headed Families: These are children living alone in their homes with no adult to care for them.We do a needs assessment to evaluate the circumstances.
Our first priorities are that their home is secure
We supply food parcels every month
We supply school uniforms and insist they go back to school.
We mentor, teach life skills, budgeting and visit them at their homes every week.We also assess their documentation for them to eventually receive Child Support grants.
This is a very successful programme but the number of Child Headed Families is always increasing and we do not have the funding to fulfill the demand.
2)Psycho Social Support: In conjunction with the home Care Giver and the school, we identify the children who are not coping at school. With trained Bereavement Councillors at the schools, we help these children to come to terms with their grief, sorrow until they can cope with their grief.
3) Orphans and Vulnerable Children: We help our orphans with their rights to
Education- supplying school uniforms and ensure they are back at school successfully
Food: we supply food parcels for the child
Safety: by visiting their Care Giver's home to ensure the orphaned child is being well cared for in a safe environment
Medication: We ensure that those children who are sick are compliant and taking T.B and HIV/Aids medication
Awareness Meetings and peer education: we focus on the children to inform and help them to realise a dream of being the start of an Aids Free Generation
