 The grant sought is for the purchase and commissioning of opthomology & optometry equipment needed for cataract removal surgery. The recepients of this service are approximately 500000 indigent inhabitants, some of whom are shack dwellers living on the outskirts of the city of Durban. The area in question is called Phoenix and the equipment would be installed at the Mahathma Gandhi Hospital, a government hospital. Partners with Rotary in this project is Kwazulu Natal Eyecare Coalition, the provincial government of KwaZulu Natal, the Right to Sight Foundation and the "Avoidable Blindness Foundation". |
