The project as such is setting up of a Physiotherapy unit and providing of Transport facility for Rehabilitation of Mentally Challenged Children of Shimla Distict . These children suffer from Autism , Cerebral Palsy , Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities. This unit shall be set up at a premises where at present an N.G.O “Udaan” is functioning . On date the number of children related with these problems is approximately 400 in Shimla town alone.
At present 45 children are enrolled with this organization out of which 20 are availing residential facilities . Efforts are being done to impart these children the right to equal opportunities such as educational and recreational but the main aspect i.e their physical growth and development is a major cause of worry . Today there is only one physiotherapy unit in Shimla which is located in the local hospital . To take these children to the local hospital is a major problem as the school functions from 10 a.m to 3 p.m and moreover it is at a distant location .
The children are suffering from Autism , Cerebral Palsy and multiple disabilities . In this scenario the physiotherapy unit shall be of great importance for the future of these children . The number of parents of those children who cannot send their wards to this cente as approximately 95% that means out of 400 children only 20-25 children have the resources to come to this centre . The rest are at the mercy of one small van cum ambulance with a seating capacity of only 8 children . This vehicle is making three sorties and ferrying 30 students daily.
The stigma attached with the disability of ones`s child is further doubled when one cannot send his or her child to a rehabilitation centre .The transportation facility i.e a mini bus having a seating capacity of 35-40 will prove to be a motivation for the poarents and the staff of the centre.Once this proposed project is approved the number of beneficiaries can be estimated to be more than 300 children.
The benefit to the community in need can be gauged from the fact that Shimla being a small town where mostly both parents are working will heave a sigh of relief as at present some of them are even forced to leave their wards in solitary confinement for whole day.
The transportation facility as well as setting up of Physiotherapy unit will go on a long way in securing better future for these children . It will create and sustain a congenial atmosphere for the education and rehabilitation of challenged children and include them in the mainstream of the society and also empower the parents of challenged children to face the challenges of disability. The time needed to complete the project is maximum six months.
