Thangde Gatsal Thangka Painting School is committed to the preservation and promotion of Himalayan Buddhist Art which is highly endangered. The school is committed to providing free training in the Himalayan Buddhist Art to students(Indians as well as Tibetan refugees) who are poor, needy and orphans. Thangka Painting is a unique artform that includes traditional techniques and the use of mineral pigments, pure gold, silver, vegetable dyes etc. It needs about 6 to 10 years of intensive training to be familiar with the training and almost thirty years to become a master. For this purpose students are expected to stay with the master as long as possible. The school provides the long term students with free food, training, accommodation, art supplies, medication, clothing and stipend. After undertaking this training a student acquires the skill to earn his own livelihood. As the artform is highly endangered, there is an urgent need to buy new books, scriptures for the Library and digital equipments to document the paintings that are done by the masters and the students in order to keep the art alive for the future generations. Furniture is also needed at the studio as well as the students residences. |
