The municipality of Olanchito has a population of 90,492; 26,292 (26.06%) inhabitants are in the urban area and 64,200 (70.94%) in the rural area distributed among 481 communities.

The project will benefit 10 rural communities; 1000 homes for a total of 6000 inhabitants.

The project will contribute to improve the health conditions in general since the access to the drinking water and sanitation directly affect the incident of common illnesses in the country, especially in the rural areas, such as: the gastrointestinal infections, fever, malaria, etc.

The bio-sand filter project is a low-cost and proven effective alternative that is also environment-friendly by eliminating the need to boil water for human consumption, thus reducing the
