As per data available, there are 6.8 million cases of corneal blindness in India and out of these 1.0 million people are bilateral blind. It is, however, sad to note that in India people are not persuaded enough to resort to eye donation. That is why in a country of more than a million and a quarter, only 20,000 eye donations take place in a calendar year which is very low. Moreover, the eyes so collected are not optimum utilized in the absence of improper guidance, lack of proper equipment.
Cornea utilization & cornea plantation can be immensely improved with spread of knowledge, proper public awareness, persuasion & the help of voluntary organizations. The most important thing at the present moment is the procurement of specular microscope, an instrument which helps in grading of cornea. There are no funds available with district administration. Procurement of this specular microscope will help to translate the dream of rotary “light for the blind” into reality & the image of rotary will be enhanced in the public. |
