Books/Computers for the Aetas
$17,500
The grant budget will be used to purchase books and computers for the indigenous peoples called the Aetas who live in Pampanga and Tarlac provinces of the Philippines.
These indigenous communities have lived in the area for a thousand years yet they remain marginalized in present Philippine society. Although they have schools built by the government, almost all of these schools lack the basic tools of learning in the modern world like science and math books and learning materials like computers. 9 out of 10 elementary school kids do not progress beyond the sixth grade while 99.9% hardly finish high school. Most attribute this high drop-out rate to poor funding for these marginalized communities and the poor facilities that hardly ever stimulate their young minds to think of a better for themselves and their families. |
