The Rotary Club São Paulo-Liberdade is located very close to the downtown of São Paulo city where there are the famous Se Cathedral and the Patio do Colegio, the place where our city was founded. In our surroundings there are a community of homeless people which is growing very fast. They live their everyday picking up recycle materials in the neibourghood while their children live abandonned in the streets.
In almost 20 years this comunity has grown up subtly and unnoticeably. In the last ten years, two no governamental organizations (NGO) are trying to help them. They are ORSA and Associação Maria Flos Carmelli with two different targets: the first one takes care of young children (from 7 to 15 years old) and the second takes care of pregnants and small children (6 months to 6 years old.
In the last 6 years we have been helping the ORSA giving them a playroom with different kinds of toys and a small library. One of our fellows who is a dentist went two or three times a year to teach teeth brushing, oral hygiene and oral health.
Now, we would like to help Associação Maria Flos Carmelli. They need a small truck because they are given many donations from different parts of the city but they don’t have any kind of car or truck and can’t go to pick them up. We also have been there with a dentist and phisysians trying to give informations mainly about hygiene and prevention of diseases to pregnants and small children.
We believe that we are facing a problem with a very slow solution but indeed it is a point of start. |
