Name of the Project – Cancer Laparoscopy System for Chemotheray Sugery for Needy Children at the Hopsital da Criança Martagão Gesteira (www.martagaogesteira.org.br), Liga Alvaro Bahia Contra a Mortalidade Infantil
2 Brief description ( in about 50 words) This is a project directed to purchasing and operating laparoscopic equipment for use in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Children Charity Hospital Martagão Gesteira.
Martagão Gesteira Children Hospital is the only pediatric hospital for the care of needy children in the metropolitan region of Salvador… Is also a reference to the treatment of children with cancer.It is important to inform that the population treated in this hospital is basically composed of needy people, mostly black, who have no access to private health service…Hospital Martagão Gesteira provides free service for children suffering from cancer. Although it receives government funds, these are insufficient to cover all necessary assistance and the additional funds come from donations. During the diagnostic phase, many of these children must be subjected to surgical biopsies and other interventions are undergoing treatment. Despite the large number of children served, even those performed by conventional procedures which causes more pain, higher rate of complications and even greater emotional impact is noteworthy that there is no need for other investments as we have a skilled team of professionals, surgical centers equipped and fully operational. Moreover, the duration of benefit to the community will be promoted immediately and all along the life of the equipment, estimated in over ten years.
