OUR NATURAL PEST CONTROL PROJECT
The pine processionary moth (PPM), noticable with its cotton-like white caterpillar bags on pine trees, is actually a moth species and the caterpillars of this species are among major pests which are damaging the forests in our country.
But, there were some death reports that PPM could cause some tree deaths especially in young reforested areas. Nevertheless, the damage continues intensively and successively for a few years weakening the tree and making it suitable for bark pests and other secondary pests.
PPM damage a number of conifer species including Pinus brutia, Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris, Pinuspinaster, Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinea, Cedrus libani and somtimes the Juniperus excelsa. When these pest decrease in numbers they are usually seen on young pine trees and other trees outside the range of the forest.
We prepared our project due to the fact that using chemical pestiside to control PPM will danger the environment. Chemical pesticide will destroy the trees as well as the birds, worms, lizards that pray on the ppm and also other species living in the forest. Resulting to the above we chose to control the PPM biologically and naturally. We aim to start the production of ‘Calosoma sycophanta’ a bug which eats and prays on the PPM. These bugs which are found in the Antalya and Mugla forest region will be transported to Aydın for production.
The authorities with the Genel Directorate of Forestry will produce calosoma in a laboratory environment where the PPM are most widespred in 2 containers and the colosoma bug will be set free to forest to control the ppm naturally.
The overal cost of the Project 20.916 $
Thank you for your help,
Aysun Akcagul (Kusadasi Rotary Club President)
