This project was submitted at the West Africa Project Fair In March 2005, the chief and people of Akim Asuboa wrote a letter to the Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central asking for assistance to construct a Community Library.
This project will provide a full set of furniture and Reading books for the library at a cost of $8,000.
The provision of this facility will go a long way to improve on the reading abilities of over 9,000 student and pupils, as well as the adult literracy in the community.
This project will also fulfill a request from the Chief, Assembly Member and entire community of Akim Asuboa South in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region for assistance in the provision of a borehole to provide water for the community. A letter detailing the need for assistance was sent to The Rotary club of Accra Ring Road Central. The only two wells in the town serving the 12,000 population are not functioning properly. As a result, a large proportion of the people rely on nearby streams and ponds for their source of water for drinking and other domestic purposes.
The water from the shallow hand dug wells are contaminated with fecal matter and other waste products whiles the stream is largely contaminated with polyps causing a high incidence of bilharzias. In order to solve the water and sanitation problems, the community appealed to the Club to support them in the provision of potable water.
During a visit to the community, the team toured the Bimpong stream which does not flow throughout the year and was dried up leaving a small pond infested with insects and weeds. During this period, the community is unable to use water from the stream and would rely only on the two wells in town and other shallow hand dugs wells owned by a number of households.
This project will provide two boreholes fitted with pumps for the community at a cost of $12,000. |
