In January 2005, the Rotary Club of Ring Road Central received a request from the Chief, Assembly Member and entire community of Akim Asuboa South for assistance in constructing a 20-seater septic tank latrine. A letter detailing the request stated that in the absence of adequate toilet facility, there is inappropriate disposal of feacal matter and this has resulted in poor environmental sanitation and a high incidence of diseases like typhoid through the contamination of the only local stream available. This stream is also highly contaiminated with polyps causing a high incidence of bilharzias. In order to solve the sanitation problem an additional toilet facility is needed to ease pressure on the existing one.
During a visit to the community by a team from the club, Ms. Sandra Appiah-Kubi, community health nurse in charge of the Asuboa South Community Health Compound corroborated the report of high incidence of typhoid in the community. She said since October last year, the centre has had over 40 cases of suspected typhoid out of which 25 were confirmed.. There is also a high incidence of bilharzia, especially amongst children of school going age with about 20 reported cases each month. Most of the cases were found in the schools during outreach programmes.
The team also visited the only community latrine which has been in use for the past 20 years. The only toilet facility serving the over 12,000 inhabitants has not seen any repairs since it was built showing broken cesspits and parts of the building gaping with wide cracks. In view of the pressure on the toilets some residents have built toilets in their homes but these have not been properly constructed, allowing run offs into hand dug wells.
This project will provide a 20-seater latrine at the cost of $12,000 and a water reservoir for $3,000. |
