About 60% of the rural communities in Ghana do not have access to good drinking water. Most of these communities depend on streams and ponds.
In many cases the people share these sources of water with their domestic animals. Goats, sheep and cattle dring from these ponds, walk through them, and defecate in the water while the villagers fetch the water for their household use. The water is often drunk or used for the preparation of meals without any treatment.
Infectious diseases such as diarrhea and guinea worm thrive in these areas as a result of these practices. Statistics show very unfortunately that guinea worm infection has increased in these communities over the past three years. This has disabled many people and has hampered their economic activities. Men and women are unable to walk and undertake their normal economic activities.
The provision of potable water can change their fortunes.
This project will provide the funding to install 2 boreholes with submersible electric pumps. These will pump water into overhead tanks for distribution by gravity.
The budget includes $9,000 to dig each borehole, $3,000 per submersible pump, $1,000 per tank, $1,000 for pipes and accessories, and $1,000 for the construction of the concrete stands. |
