One of the great social problems in Western Kenya as well as most developing countries is the problem of children who live on the street. Their are many factors that contribute to this social problem but two of the key ingrediants are HIV/AIDS and economic pressures on rural families as a result of the loss of the bread winner in the family. The objective of the project is to rehabilitate children who live on the street and restore and empower their rural families so that the child and family can be reunited. The children will be counseled on the street through an existing outreach feeding program on Sunday mornings organized by a local church and the recipient of this grant: Capstone Ministries. They will be housed by Capstone only short term for rehabilitation while their family is also being counseled. The founders of this organization are experienced missionaries in Kenya and all four are also Rotarians.
Two are Americans and two are indiginous citizens of Kenya. This grant will assist them with much needed office equipment and transport vehicles for reaching rural villages. A 4X4 vehicle is a necessity on many of these dirt roads and the motorcyles allow follow up visits to be done on empowered families in an economical way. The specific supplies provided by this grant are: office supplies (copier, projector), a pick-up truck, two motorcycles. It will also purchase desks, filing cabinets, book shelves, student desks, energy saving cooker, tables, chairs. The project is within the town of Kisumu and also in the rural area just north of Kisumu, Kenya. The recipients of this project are a child and family restoration organization called Capstone Ministries. |
