PROJECT FUNDING PROPOSAL FOR BARUT COMMUNITY WATER SUPPLY

FOR THE INSTALLALION OF A BOOSTER PUMP, SURVEY AND PIPES

ESTIMATED AT= GRAND TOTAL= 5100 USD

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This partnership is to enable the community living in Barut Division access water supplied by the Soar Kenya borehole.

The main objective of the project is to provide water to the residents/community. Already the project has connected over one hundred homes with metered water. However most of the residents who are connected live on the lower side of Soar Kenya where the borehole is located and therefore they can get the water that flows through force of gravity. The current project is therefore designed to supply water to the residents living on the upper part, that is, on an elevated ground. Barut Division is situated to the Southern side of Nakuru town and borders Lake Nakuru National park to the west about 12 kilometers from Nakuru town.

The project will involve pumping water to an elevated ground situated about 3 kilometers from the borehole to a reservoir tank. The water will then be allowed to flow through gravity to metered households of Barut community. The community of Barut is expected to provide labor during digging of the trench, buying and laying pipes and other charges related to water connection to their households. The community is also expected to sustain the project by paying a monthly water bill depending on water consumption per household and also a fixed charge of Ksh 100 for maintenance of the piping system. This will ensure the project is self sustaining and make the community feel they own the project.

The inhabitants of Barut Division and surrounding areas mainly consist of low to medium income earners since it is a peri-urban area. Most of the residents engage in subsistence farming, keeping livestock and crop farming. The area has good soil for farming/agriculture but the rainfall is seasonal and erratic. Residents in the area have in the past years relied on a community borehole that supplies water to over 1000 residents. The borehole is therefore overworked and this has lead to frequent breakdowns. Residents have therefore had to walk long distances to get water for domestic use and for their livestock.

The residents of the area will also be able to practice drip irrigation farming on a small scale (Kitchen gardening) since water will be available. The area has been experiencing low and erratic rainfall. Being a peri-urban area, it is also experiencing a population explosion coupled with land fragmentation that has also amplified the current problem of water shortage and low agricultural productivity. The little water available which is sometimes rationed and the meager harvest from the farms does not sustain the increasing population leading to poor sanitation in households, food insecurity and worsening the poverty echelon.

The current partnership with the community is to try to provide metered water to the residents, improve household sanitation, revolutionize the current perception that livestock and crop growing is no longer viable in the area and also to make agriculture an income generating activity for the community as opposed to subsistence farming.

Many of the Barut community residents depend on agriculture for food supply and also as an income earner and hence there is a need to develop a better system of farming that can enable farmers overcome the challenge of low and erratic rainfall and also the problem of land fragmentation. The best way to achieve this will start by ensuring that every household has access to clean and regular supply of water.

JUSTIFICATION

Unreliable water supply, low and erratic rainfall has led to water borne diseases and several crop failures in Barut Division and many parts of the country. Population explosion has also placed pressure on the few water resources available. This phenomenon has also seen many people abandoning agriculture. This poses a challenge on food security and nutrition of households as well as incomes which they have relied for generations

One of the solutions to the problem that is facing the country and in particular Barut Division is ensuring households have regular clean water supply. The project will also ensure that the community can also practice small scale drip irrigation farming which will enable farmers grow crops all year round and therefore improve food security of households and also enable households to earn income through sale of surplus produce.

2.4 PROJECT ESTIMATED COST

QUOTATION FOR PUMP AND INSTALLATION

WATER PUMP =3000 USD

SURVEY =100 USD

PIPES =2000 USD

The community will participate by contributing the required labour during installation of pipes

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

The Rotary club of Nakuru together with the management committee of the project will implement the project from inception and follow-up to the completion of the project and come up with a completion report.

Mobilization of community will be based on willingness. However before water is connected to an interested member, they have to pay a connection fee (Ksh. 1,000). The members have also to bear the cost of connecting water from the main supply line and the water meter. The beneficiaries will also be required to provide their time and labor during installation of pipes. The community will also provide a portion of land where the reservoir water tank will be located.

Follow up will be done by the management committee and the project is expected to be self sustaining since members will be paying monthly water bills to cater for electricity bills at the borehole (Soar Kenya) and a standing charge of 100 per month to cater for any repairs and future installations that may be necessary.

Once the community members are connected to the water supply, they shall also be trained on some income generating activities such as kitchen gardening which they help establish with the available water and hence improve on household food security and also be able to earn income through sale of surplus produce from their gardens.

CONCLUSION

We are requesting for the support towards funding of the Booster Pump and survey to enable us improve the livelihoods of the community living in Barut Division hence make this world a better place to be in future. Any donation we receive, we shall receipt and scan to the person, group, institution or organization that made the donation.

Thank you and May God bless you!
