Project Description Country: USA Location: Carlsbad, CA Total Budget: $2,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Provide dictionaries to all third graders in Carlsbad Unified School District. Improving literacy in our community can be accomplished by assuring that all third grade students in Carlsbad receive a personal dictionary. In addition, those needing Spanish/English dictionaries are also provided with that learning tool. The dictionaries are enhanced with stickers outlining the Rotary 4-way test and distributed by Rotarians from the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club who visit each classroom, speak to the students about Rotary, and engage with them on how to use dictionaries to improve vocabulary and spelling, and reinforce other skills, such as identifying parts of speech, word origins, and proper usage. This is an annual project that is highly anticipated and positively received by school communities (administrators, teachers, parents, students) in our district and usually takes place in October. If the grant is unable to be funded at the $1000 level, we would happily accept a matching $500 grant available for literacy projects.
